Christie: GOP Still Shouldn't Back Akin

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...

Marathon Oil: Inside The Numbers

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Determining a company's financial health is a very important step in making a decision on whether or not to invest or to stay invested. There are many different ways to compute a company's financial health. In this test, I will be considering Marathon Oil Corporation's (MRO) profitability, debt and capital, and operating efficiency. Based on these criteria, we get to see sales, returns, margins, liabilities, assets, returns, and turnovers.

Note: All numbers sourced from the company website.

Profitability

Profitability is a class of financial metrics that are used to assess a business's ability to generate earnings, compared with expenses and other relevant costs incurred during a specific period of time.

In this section, we will look at four tests of profitability. They are: Net Income, Operating Cash Flow, Return on Assets, and Quality of Earnings. From these four metrics, we will establish if the company is making money, and gauge the quality of the reported profits.

  1. Net Income 2011 = $2.946 billion

To pass, the company needs to have a positive net income. Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Operating Cash Flow 2011 = $4.813 billion

Operating Cash Flow is the cash generated from the operations of a company, generally defined as revenue less all operating expenses, but calculated through a series of adjustments to net income.

To pass, the company needs to have a positive operating cash flow. Marathon Oil passes.

  1. ROA - Return On Assets

ROA is an indicator of how profitable a company is relative to its total assets. ROA gives an idea as to how efficient management is at using its assets to generate earnings. Calculated by dividing a company's net income by its total assets, ROA is displayed as a percentage. Sometimes this is referred to as "return on investment."

  • ROA in 2010 = 5.13%

  • ROA in 2011 = 9.39%

  • Net income growth, 2010 = $2.568 billion to 2011 = $2.946 billion, a increase of 14.72%

  • Total Asset growth, 2010 = $50.014 billion to 2011 = $31.371 billion, an decrease of 37.28%

In 2010-11, Marathon Oil's ROA increased from 5.13% to 9.39%. As the ROA increased, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Quality of Earnings

Quality of Earnings is the amount of earnings attributable to higher sales or lower costs rather than artificial profits created by accounting anomalies such as inflation of inventory.

To pass, the operating cash flow must exceed the net income. Marathon Oil passes, as operating cash flow exceeds net income.

Debt and Capital

The Debt and Capital section establishes if the company is sinking into debt or digging its way out. It will also determine if the company is growing organically or raising cash by selling off stock.

  1. Total Liabilities to Total Assets, or TL/A ratio

TL/A ratio is a metric used to measure a company's financial risk by determining how much of the company's assets have been financed by debt.

  • Total Assets - 2010 = $50.014 billion

  • Total Assets - 2011 = $31.371 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 37.28%

  • Total Liabilities 2010 = $26.243 billion

  • Total liabilities 2011 = $14.219 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 45.81%

Marathon Oil's decrease in total assets was less the percentage decrease of total liabilities. Total assets decreased by 37.28%, while the total liabilities decreased by 45.81%. As the total liabilities decreased more than the total assets, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Working Capital

Working Capital is a general and quick measure of liquidity of a firm. It represents the margin of safety or cushion available to the creditors. It is an index of the firm's financial stability. It is also an index of technical solvency and an index of the strength of working capital.

Marathon Oil's current ratio dropped from 1.24 in 2010 to 0.73 in 2011. As Marathon Oil's current ratio decreased, Marathon Oil does not pass.

  1. Shares Outstanding

To pass, the company's shares must increase less than by 2%. Marathon Oil's shares increased by 0.28%. Marathon Oil passes.

Operating Efficiency

Operating Efficiency is a market condition that exists when participants can execute transactions and receive services at a price that equates fairly to the actual costs required to provide them. An operationally efficient market allows investors to make transactions that move the market further toward the overall goal of prudent capital allocation without being chiseled down by excessive frictional costs, which would reduce the risk/reward profile of the transaction.

  1. Gross Margin: Gross Income/Sales

The gross profit margin is a measurement of a company's manufacturing and distribution efficiency during the production process. The gross profit tells an investor the percentage of revenue/sales left after subtracting the cost of goods sold. A company that boasts a higher gross profit margin than its competitors and industry is more efficient. Investors tend to pay more for businesses that have higher efficiency ratings than their competitors, as these businesses should be able to make a decent profit as long as overhead costs are controlled (overhead refers to rent, utilities, etc.).

  • Gross Margin 2010 = $4.786 billion/ $12.873 billion = 31.18%
  • Gross Margin 2011 = $6.225 billion/ $15.282 billion = 40.73%

The gross margin increased from 31.18% in 2010 to 40.73% in 2011. As the gross margin increased, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Asset Turnover

The formula for the asset turnover ratio evaluates how well a company is utilizing its assets to produce revenue.

The numerator of the asset turnover ratio formula shows revenues found on a company's income statement and the denominator shows total assets, which is found on a company's balance sheet. Total assets should be averaged over the period of time that is being evaluated.

  • Sales growth - 2010 sales = $12.873 billion

  • Sales growth - 2011 sales = $15.282 billion

  • 18.71% sales increase

  • Total Assets - 2010 = $50.014 billion

  • Total Assets - 2011 = $31.371 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 37.28%

As the sales growth exceeded the asset growth, this implies that the company is producing revenue on its assets. Marathon Oil passes.

Based on the nine tests that Marathon Oil received on profitability, debt and capital, and operating efficiency, the company achieved eight passes, out of nine - this is an excellent grade for financial health. Marathon Oil did not pass the working capital aspect of the test. As the company did not pass the working capital aspect of the test this implies that the company did not have as much liquidity as it did a year ago. This is one aspect of the company to watch moving forward. Overall, the company is showing excellent results regarding financial health.

Is Apple trying to kill Pandora?

It's fortunate that my current contract prevents me from getting the iPhone 5. By the time I'm unshackled, in approximately a year, I presume the mapping situation will be fixed, and other bells and whistles will be added, or improved.

I do have iOS6, and have noted some minor mistakes on its map app driving around town. Before I venture to parts lesser known, I'll have to download a separate maps app, or print out a Google map and glance at it while driving. That's a drag, but let's put it down alongside Apple's other rare slips, like Ping or MobileMe.

As a longtime fanboy - going back before the 128k Macintosh - there's something that disturbs me more. For no particularly reason, Apple has decided to get into the Internet radio business, a move that threatens the future of a home-grown pioneer that has already struggled against great odds: Pandora Media.

Now a public company with an estimated 150 million registered users, Pandora grew out of Oakland's Music Genome Project, co-founded by Tim Westergren in 1999. Using a complicated algorithm, the project codifies hundreds of vocal and instrumental characteristics into five "genomes" ranging from rock and hip-hop to jazz, classical and world music. The genomes form the basis of playlists Pandora provides for users choosing "stations" based on their list of favorite songs, musical pieces, artists or genres, like "Madonna Radio," "Adagio for Strings Radio," "Charlie Parker Radio" or "Salsa Radio."

Since its launch in 2000, Pandora has gone on to capture 74 percent of online radio listeners and a 6.3 percent share of the radio audience nationwide. It's far ahead of rivals like Spotify and Rdio. In July, 55 million registered users downloaded music from its servers. Pandora's app is on every smartphone platform (it's the second most downloaded app on the iPhone), comes pre-installed on most major new car radios, and has steadily increased advertising revenue.

However, profit remains elusive, and it wasn't so long ago that Pandora was staring death in the face. Hemmed in by impossibly high royalty payments to the music industry, Pandora was on the verge of going out of business in 2008, rescued at the last minute by the bipartisan Webcaster Settlement Act, signed by President George W. Bush, enabling online music providers to negotiate lower royalties.

Seeking to level the playing field further - half of its $101.3 million second quarter revenue went to royalties - Pandora is lobbying hard for a bipartisan bill sponsored by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, that would put Internet radio royalties on the same, lower, basis as those paid by satellite and cable radio channels.

Coincidentally, with Pandora's upbeat third quarter estimates, issued in late August, reports surfaced that Apple was in licensing talks with major record companies for a customized music streaming service much the same as Pandora's. Instant reaction: Pandora's stock price dropped 22 percent.

Talks were so far along, according to some reports, that Apple was scheduled to introduce its streaming service to the world along with iPhone 5 two weeks ago. That is, until Sony balked at the licensing fee Apple was offering.

At least Apple fans have been temporarily saved from another crummy app of its own making. But if Apple is serious, what happens to Pandora, which, by the way, contributes considerable revenue via its one-click link to Apple's iTunes salesroom? Kicked to the curb like Google's maps, in the name of what, besides pure avarice?

Ironically, in the wake of Apple's move, there is talk that Google, or maybe even Amazon, which are both seeking to augment their music and entertainment offerings, could step in as Pandora's white knight. "The people at Pandora know how to make compelling services that people like and love. That kind of expertise is extremely valuable," Tom Taulli, an analyst at IPOPlaybook.com, told Bloomberg Businessweek.

Apple isn't commenting - it never does - and neither is Pandora. "We are in the business of providing the best music experience possible," said Pandora spokesman Eric Brown. "And creating it isn't easy."

When my iPhone contract is up, I'll go where Pandora goes. Should that be an Android phone, so be it.

U.N. chief urges careful handling of Myanmar Rohingyas issue

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the world's largest Islamic body on Saturday to "treat carefully" the issue of the stateless Muslim Rohingyas in Myanmar because it could affect the reform process underway in the country, also known as Burma.

Over the past year, Myanmar has introduced the most sweeping reforms in the former British colony since a 1962 military coup. A semi-civilian government, stacked with former generals, has allowed elections, eased rules on protests and freed dissidents.

But an outbreak of violence in June between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and the Rohingyas killed 80 people and displaced thousands. At least 800,000 Rohingyas are not recognized as one of the country's many ethnic and religious groups.

Rights groups accused Myanmar security forces of killing, raping and arresting Rohingyas after the riots. Myanmar has said it exercised "maximum restraint" in quelling the riots.

Ban discussed the issue in separate meeting with Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and Myanmar President Thein Sein on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly of world leaders.

During his meeting with Ihsanoglu, Ban "indicated the importance of the situation in Rakhine being treated carefully because of the potential wider implications of the Rakhine issue on the overall reform process in Myanmar," his spokesman said.

An OIC committee set up to deal with the Rohingya issue met for the first time in New York this week and called for them to be given rights as citizens in Myanmar. Ihsanoglu said he wanted to visit Myanmar when the government was ready to "to remedy the fundamental rights issues of the Rohingya Muslims."

Myanmar's president is in a tight spot. Concessions towards the Rohingyas could prove unpopular among the general public, but perceived ill-treatment risks angering Western countries that have eased sanctions in response to human rights reforms.

Thein Sein said in June the government was only responsible for third-generation Rohingyas whose families had arrived before independence in 1948 and that it was impossible to accept those who had "illegally entered" Myanmar.

Ban and Thein Sein "discussed the recent outbreak of violence in Rakhine state and the immediate and long-term perspectives to promote inter-communal harmony and address the root causes of the tension there, including developmental efforts," Ban's spokesman said in a statement.

"The President confirmed the country would address the long-term ramifications of this question," the spokesman said.

Last week Aung Min, a minister in President Thein Sein's office and the government's top negotiator in peace talks with at least 10 ethnic minority rebel groups, said the government had set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the violence between the Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingyas.

The commission would look at how further violence could be prevented, which includes examining the status of the ethnic minorities, he said. It is due to report on due November 16.

Sabathia, Yanks maintain lead with win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? This hasn't been the smoothest of seasons for C.C. Sabathia. He's still coming through when it counts for the New York Yankees.

Sabathia struck out 10 batters over eight innings and New York beat the Minnesota Twins 8-2 on Wednesday to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore in the AL East.

The Orioles beat Toronto 12-2 on Wednesday night. The Yankees visit the Blue Jays for four games starting Thursday. Baltimore, after an off day, plays Boston at home this weekend. Sabathia will pitch again next week when the Yankees host the Red Sox.

"This is what he can do. He can string a bunch of good ones together. And if there's a time, now's the time," manager Joe Girardi said.

Sabathia (14-6) threw 89 of his 118 pitches for strikes, including three straight to Twins All-Star Joe Mauer for the second of his three strikeouts in the fourth inning. Mauer, who began the day three points in the batting race behind Detroit's Triple Crown chaser Miguel Cabrera with a .326 average, went 0 for 4.

"That's the best I've seen him, and I've been watching him for a long time," Mauer said. "When I was up there he was both sides of the plate: fastball, slider, sinker. He threw me everything, and everything was working."

Sabathia spent two stints on the disabled list this summer, for a strained left groin and an inflamed left elbow. This was his first win in six starts, and he credited impeccable command of his fastball to set up his other pitches.

"We're in a race. We know it's going to be tough. So you want to go out and do well every time out," Sabathia said, adding: "Hopefully, I can go out and pitch well again the next time. I'll take what I can out of this one and be ready to go five days from now."

Robinson Cano hit a two-run double and Curtis Granderson added a two-run triple during a six-run third inning against Brian Duensing (4-11), and Sabathia took care of the rest. The burly lefty gave up six hits, two runs and one walk.

Sabathia improved to 10-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 11 appearances against the Twins, including the 2009 and 2010 postseason. He threw eight scoreless innings in his last start against Oakland, striking out 11, but didn't get the victory because the Yankees won in the 10th. Matt Carson and Pedro Florimon had RBI singles, but that was about the only solid contact Sabathia allowed.

Chris Dickerson also hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who lost to the Twins on Tuesday night and played without third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who has a bruised left foot. Derek Jeter's 19-game hitting streak ended with an 0-for-4 afternoon, but he walked and scored in the third.

The Yankees enjoyed a tension-free afternoon while winning for the 12th time in their last 16 games. Even the bad plays turned out all right.

Granderson was picked off first base in the second inning, but he scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Eric Chavez, thinking there were two outs instead of one in the fifth inning, casually fielded a grounder at third and stepped on the base for the force as he jogged toward the dugout before stopping and realizing his mistake. Sabathia shouted assurance to Chavez, whose embarrassed "oops" expression was frozen on the jumbo video screen above left-center field to the crowd's amusement.

"I'm glad they were entertained," Chavez said, smiling.

But after a passed ball by Chris Stewart put runners at second and third and threatened to exploit Chavez's blunder, Sabathia calmly retired Denard Span on a groundout to first to keep the lead at 6-1. If Chavez had tried to turn the double play, he might've only got one out anyway, Girardi said, which would've led to a run on the passed ball.

"Sometimes things work out right," Girardi said.

After a leadoff double by Raul Ibanez in the sixth, Dickerson circled the bases with his drive off Anthony Swarzak, who was the second long reliever called on by the Twins.

Starter Samuel Deduno struck out two without a hit or a run despite two walks. After the second one, though, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and assistant athletic trainer Dave Pruemer came to the mound for a long talk with the right-hander with two outs in the second inning. The diagnosis was irritation in his left eye, and Deduno was removed for Duensing.

He put seven straight runners on, including two walks, before finishing the inning. Duensing, who started a postseason game against the Yankees in 2009 and 2010, let his ERA rise from 4.68 to 5.15.

"I feel like we're playing our best ball now, and this is the perfect time to be doing that," said Nick Swisher, who had an RBI single.

NOTES: RH Ivan Nova (12-7, 4.94 ERA) pitches for the Yankees on Thursday against RH Brandon Morrow (8-7, 3.28 ERA) of the Blue Jays. The Twins are off on Thursday before hosting Detroit this weekend. They'll send LH Scott Diamond (12-8, 3.64 ERA) to the mound on Friday, opposite RH Max Scherzer (16-7, 3.82 ERA) of the Tigers. ... The Yankees have homered in each of their last 12 games against the Twins, totaling 25 in that span. ... The Yankees notched their 90th win for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons. ... Swisher made a nifty scoop and throw to get Ben Revere out on a slow roller in the first inning. He's been playing 1B with Mark Teixeira rehabilitating his strained right calf. "I'm just trying to keep it warm until my boy Tex gets back," Swisher said. Girardi left open the possibility of Teixeira returning to the team this weekend in Toronto.

One of the most iconic board games of all time, Monopoly has won over millions of people with its gameplay. For those of you than don?t know, Monopoly involves purchasing properties to the extent that you literally monopolise the board and claim rent from other players so you can be the most valuable player at the end of the fray when someone goes bankrupt.

Although playing against artificial intelligence in the single-player mode isn?t comparable to playing against your friends in multiplayer, this app still immortalises an essential gaming experience, making it a staple in your collection.

Trivial Pursuit

Tons of well illustrated text and picture questions are readily available in this recreation of the time-tested game, Trivial Pursuit. You can play with up to four players using Pass ?n Play and through Wi-Fi. You can play in either Classic or Pursuit Mode, both of which offer a great trivia experience.

One of the great things about this app is you have a fully customisable player profile where you can set your own difficulty of questions and time limits. The app does look quite impressive compared to some other board game imitations, especially on the iPhone?s Retina Display. A great buy.

Battleship

I?ve spent ages playing this hit-and-miss classic on my iPhone and I always go through waves of nostalgia. The app has done the game justice by presenting it with sharp and animated graphics throughout the app that really enhance the experience.

There are all sorts of twists in the app that aren?t featured in the real board game, such as super weapons and ?Salvo Mode? that keep this timeless classic fresh and new. The app also has two-player Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Pass ?n Play capabilities that add a lot to the replay value.

Chess (Premium)

Chess is one of, if not the most, well-known board game out there. This is one of the best chess experiences for the iPhone and has yet to be passed after a long time. Chess Premium supports both one- and two-player games, so if you?re too much of a chess whiz for your family and friends, then you can take on the AI with an adjustable difficulty level.

There is a nifty undo function if you accidentally hit the wrong square or you want to rethink your move, however that could put off more hardcore players, as it?s sort of a safety net. It?s as close to modern as chess can be, and a valuable purchase.

Risk

Risk is a real-time strategy game that involves preservation and the conquering of territories on a world map. You have soldiers in each locale that can attack other territories and the outcome is based on the roll of a die, influenced by how many men accompany both territories.

This is probably one of my favourite board games of all time, and to see it flourish so well on this app is just phenomenal. You?ll have hours of fun playing this graphically sound classic.

Clue

Clue, or Cluedo, is a detective-style game where you have to use the information provided to deduce the identity of the weapon, location and person of a murderer. The game features multiple puzzles to solve but lacks multiplayer capacity. Admittedly, this game is much more enjoyable in real life, however, that doesn?t mean you can?t enjoy some retro fun with this app.

Catan

Settlers of Catan is a board game known for it?s in-depth strategy and time-consuming tendencies, and is a superb way to get into the game if you haven?t already. You have the ability to compete with up to four players for settlements, roads and armies. Trade between players is also possible.

If you?re short of people to play with, you can battle with the game?s AI, all of which have their own individual characteristics, making each game a unique experience. It contains a scrollable game board with zoom that looks true to the original as well.

Board Game Collection

Many individual board games have already been mentioned, but if you prefer the classics and want an all-in-one experience, this this brilliant free app is the way to go. Featuring great games such as Nine Men?s Morris, Noughts and Crosses, Reversi, and many more, the fun is almost endless with this incredible bargain. You can connect to other players locally or via Game Center, so there?s a whole bunch of replay value in this app.

Yahtzee Adventures

Like I said in the introduction, Yahtzee is one of my most treasured childhood games, and I could not go through this roundup without putting it in somewhere. Living up to the real thing, Yahtzee Adventures attempts to take the experience around the world, letting you challenge AI in multiple locations across the globe.

There are a few modes to choose from, each offering different styles of play that will suit most people. The opponents all challenge your luck of the draw as you battle them individually, or you can take on up to three people in Pass ?n Play mode.

Scrabble

Possibly the ultimate word-based board game, Scrabble has been translated into an incredible app that offers the same (or better) level of enjoyment than the board game itself. Unlike other apps, Scrabble has Facebook integration and you can play against random opponents if you?re short of an adversary.

The teacher feature means you can see the best move you could?ve made after each go, so in no time at all you?ll be turned into a Scrabble pro. There are also leader boards on Game Center, which make you keep coming back for more.

Taking the battle against the toxic trio beyond 'Leaves of three, leave it be'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? With more than half of all adults allergic to poison ivy, oak and sumac, scientists are reporting an advance toward an inexpensive spray that could reveal the presence of the rash-causing toxic oil on the skin, clothing, garden tools, and even the family cat or dog. Using the spray, described in ACS' The Journal of Organic Chemistry would enable people to wash off the oil, or avoid further contact, in time to sidestep days of misery.

Rebecca Braslau and colleagues explain that allergic reactions to oils of the toxic trio are more than a nusiance. They claim a huge human and economic toll, accounting for thousands of medical visits, days lost from work and school and sheer misery for the victims. It takes only 0.04th of a drop of the plants' oil to trigger a reaction, and the oil is invisible. The scientists thus sought to begin developing a way to make the oil visible, so that people can do a reality check after venturing into outdoor areas where the toxic plants grow.

They describe development of a spray that, when applied to leaves of poison ivy, oak and sumac, reacts with urushiol, the toxic oil produced by those plants. When exposed to an ordinary fluorescent light, the spray glows if urushiol is present, revealing the location of the oil. "This constitutes the groundwork for the future development of a spray to detect urushiol to avoid contact dermatitis," the scientists say.

Preparing For A First Camping Trip

Camping in the great outdoors is something that everyone will, and probably should experience at least once in their life. For some it is an experience they will never wish to have ever again, and for others it becomes something that they love to do.

Packing up a family size tent and making sure that all of the necessary parts to go with it, should be the first thoughts for preparing to go camping. Many who go camping for the first time forget something important which could end up making their experience less enjoyable. A lot of people also dread the task of putting a tent up but with a practice run at home and the instructions at hand for when you arrive, you should be fine. If in doubt upon your arrival ask around. Others at the campsite will either go often or be new just the same as you and would probably appreciate hearing somebody struggling as they are too! It can be a fun and sociable thing, especially for children if you pick a good place to stay.

It is always best to stay close to home for your first camping adventure, just in case you decide it is not for you. If it was so bad that you have the urge to pack up and go home, at least you will only be an hour or so drive away. If you do enjoy the holiday and want to do it again you will have options to look for further afield, and maybe even stretch to travelling to somewhere in France.

As well as all of the tent bits, cooking equipment, sleeping bags etc. you need to consider clothing. The weather in the UK is unpredictable so always prepare for rain. Even in the middle of summer you just know at some point the clouds will draw in and the Heavens will open! Pack warm thick fleeces and put one over the top of a t-shirt. If it is cold you will be nice and warm and if you get too warm from walking then you can simply take off the fleece to cool down. Make sure to have plenty of extra socks, if you decide to walk out of the tent in a pair they will get muddy so always have more than you need. Last but not least pack a positive attitude. If you go thinking you will enjoy it, you are more likely to have a better time, a bit of mud never hurt anyone!

Kinect Can Help Doctors Monitor Your Physical Rehab From Home [Video]

Bright minds at the West Health Institute in San Diego have developed a technology that allows patients in need of physical therapy to perform necessary exercises away from their doctors expert guidance through use of a Microsoft Kinect. The technology, called the Reflexion Rehabilitation Measurement Tool (RMT), utilizes a Windows 7 personal computer and the Microsoft Kinect for Windows motion camera device to keep patients actively and consistently engaged in physical therapy throughout their daily lives. Toyota plans dialed-back launch of eQ and iQ EV city cars in December

Toyota plans limited launch of eQ and iQ EV in December

Toyota's just-arrived RAV4 EV will soon get a much smaller cousin -- albeit a very elusive one. An electric version of the iQ city car will arrive in Japan (as the eQ) and the US (as the iQ EV) this December, but the automaker is significantly scaling back its 2010 promises of several thousand cars sold per year to just 100 fleet-oriented vehicles. The charging times, costs and range of EVs "do not meet society's needs," vice chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada says to explain the smaller ambitions. It's easy to understand the cautious approach after seeing the car's final details. While they're not out of line with the specs of other EVs, the eQ's 3-hour fast charge, 62-mile range and ¥3.6 million ($46,130) price wouldn't have regular customers flocking to dealerships. Most of Toyota's energy is instead being funneled into its tried-and-true hybrids, with 21 due on the market by 2015, as well as plans to deliver the company's first hydrogen fuel cell car by the same year. Eco-conscious drivers may be disappointed that Toyota isn't moving as aggressively into a pure electric realm as some of its rivals, but we'd rather see smartly planned baby steps than an overly risky plunge.

Iran commander says could launch pre-emptive strike on Israel

DUBAI | Sun Sep 23, 2012 11:04am EDT

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state were preparing to attack it, a senior commander of its elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made the comments to Iran's state-run Arabic language Al-Alam television, according to a report on the network's website.

"Iran will not start any war but it could launch a pre-emptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it," Al-Alam said, paraphrasing the military commander.

Hajizadeh said any attack on Iranian soil could trigger "World War Three".

"We cannot imagine the Zionist regime starting a war without America's support. Therefore, in case of a war, we will get into a war with both of them and we will certainly get into a conflict with American bases," he said

"In that case, unpredictable and unmanageable things would happen and it could turn into a World War Three."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made increasing hints that Israel could strike Iran's nuclear sites and has criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Iran getting the atomic bomb.

Tehran denied it is seeking weapons capability and says its atomic work is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.

It's Getting Hot in Here: The Horror of PC Overheating | Computer ...

Guest post by Jennifer.

As the hardware associated with personal computing gets more advanced, engineers and developers are concerned about the rising temperatures.

Silicon Valley, Northern California and the Pacific Northwest are all regions that have been made notable for the amount of high technology companies that have established their headquarters therein. In California, Facebook is in Menlo Park and Google in Mountain View; in Washington, the main offices of Microsoft are located in Redmond. These areas are known for their temperate weather and their high quality of life, and yet those companies are seeking to set up shop in some of the coldest, most desolate regions of the world.

In Sweden, online social networking colossus Facebook is expanding to Lulea, a town located less than 100 miles away from the Arctic Circle. Search engine giant Google announced last year that it had moved some assets to a large structure that once housed a paper mill in Hamina, Finland. In 2009, Microsoft established a presence in a chilly, although a lot more livelier, city: Dublin, Ireland.

What is attracting these Internet and technology giants to these regions? Facebook and Google may be interested in Scandinavian culture, and Microsoft might be looking for the luck of the Irish to bolster their bottom line even more, but what these companies have in common are gigantic data centers or server farms that normally run scorching hot. Moving some of their operations to chilly climates help keep their hardware cool and their crucial data safe.

The Dangers of Overheating

Just about any piece of hardware equipped with a central processing unit (CPU) will generate heat. In the case of the server farms of Facebook, Google and Microsoft, the heat produced by their hardware components is impressive. The current trend of cloud computing demands more processing power from data centers, and thus today?s servers are approximating the CPU power of supercomputers -meaning that they get extremely hot and thus can be more efficiently housed in colder climate regions like Dublin, Lulea and Hamina.

laptop overheating

Personal computing devices are no stranger to high temperatures. The average temperature of an AMD Athlon 64 is between 90 to 95 Celsius while an Intel Celeron can get as hot 85 degrees Celsius. The mobile versions of those chips run even hotter, averaging 100 degrees- the temperature at which water reaches its boiling point; for this reason desktop and laptop computers have built-in cooling devices, such as fans, to cool them down. In the case of mobile computing devices, most smartphones and tablets do not have built-in cooling fans. While the chipset architecture of these mobile devices is designed to emit less heat than their desktop and laptop counterparts, overheating is still a dangerous issue, particularly when they are left unattended in close proximity of flammable materials. News reports of laptops and tablets that have caught on fire after they were left unattended on a couch or a bed are a clear reminder that these devices are prone to overheating.

Cooling Solutions

It?s not just the fire hazard that is a concern. When a personal computing system overheats, all the information stored therein could be lost forever, another reason why disaster recovery plan is so important perhaps. Hardware manufacturers and distributors of accessories are coming up with sensible solutions to keep computing devices cool without having to move to Alaska. There are a few cooling solutions on the market these days. Some computer makers are adding more air vents to their cases, and some manufacturers of high-end desktop and laptop computers specially built for gamers have sophisticated liquid cooling systems. Laptops and other mobile computers can be prevented from overheating with special cooling pads and external fans than can be attached to the device for cooling on the go.

Here are other viable solutions that were honored with an Innovation Award at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show:

Maingear Shift Performance Desktop PC

By rotating the internal components by 90 degrees, this desktop takes advantage of the physical properties of heat. The layout of the Maingear Shift allows hot air to escape through the roof of the computer case.

MSI N460GTX Hawk Graphics Card

MSI is mostly known as a netbook manufacturer, but its foray into high-performance graphics cards features an innovative way of keeping these devices cool even when gamers decide to overclock their systems. MSI?s Hawk graphics card is overclocked right out of the box, and it is protected against overheating by built-in twin fans and heat pipes.

SilverStone Fortress FT03 Desktop PC

This powerful desktop would normally require large noisy fans or a liquid cooling system to avoid overheating, but by simply rotating the internal components 90 degrees and strategically placing air vents that allow heat to rise and escape, the SilverStone Fortress FT03 manages to keep cool without consuming too much energy.
