Investigators prepare to exhume Arafat's body

Investigators have begun to exhume the body of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in an attempt to determine whether he was assassinated by lethal doses of radioactive poison. NBC's John Ray reports.

By NBC News' Kari Huus and wire services

Did the late Palestinian leader die of poisoning? This is the nagging question that French investigators hope to answer by exhuming the remains of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Tuesday, eight years after his death in a Paris hospital at the age of 75.

French judges in charge of the investigation arrived on Sunday evening in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the site of Arafat's mausoleum, in a murder investigation that was opened in August, the French news agency AFP reported.

Rumors of foul play have long surrounded the sudden demise of Arafat, a champion of Palestinian statehood from the time he was 19, and eventually, the democratically-elected president of the Palestinian Authority.

Arafat was revered by many Palestinians and Arabs as a freedom fighter, and reviled by many Israelis and its allies as a terrorist for his relentless fight for Palestinian self-determination. But he also had enemies and rivals within the Arab and Palestinian political circles.

The rapid deterioration of his health and death baffled doctors who were trying to treat him in France, and an autopsy was never performed at the request of his widow, Suha.

Many Palestinians believe Arafat was poisoned at the behest of Israel ? an idea that Israel has rejected.

But poisoning as a cause of death gained currency after a Swiss institute said it had found high levels of radioactive polonium on Arafat?s clothing, which was supplied by Suha, prompting the French to open a formal murder inquiry.

Polonium was the substance that killed Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. Litvenenko was a Russian ex-spy who later became a relentless critic of the Kremlin.

"It is a painful necessity" to exhume the body of Arafat, said Tawfiq al-Tirawi, who is in charge of the Palestinian committee overseeing the investigation, speaking to reporters in Ramallah on Saturday.

Slideshow: Arafat's journey

Tirawi said the Palestinians had "evidence which suggests Arafat was assassinated by Israelis," Reuters reported.?

Tirawi said separate samples will be taken from the remains by the French and Swiss forensic teams, as well as a Russian team of experts invited by the Palestinians, and that results could take up to several months to be announced. Arafat?s body would be reburied in a military ceremony, he said.

Not everyone agrees that exhuming the late leader serves a purpose because even if it shows that he was poisoned ? which may be hard to establish this long after his death ? it won?t reveal who poisoned him.?

The exhumation and renewed allegations of Israeli involvement could stir further tension between the Palestinians and Israelis, who are observing a truce after a week of fierce fighting in Gaza.

An editorial in the Jerusalem Post on Monday lambasted the process.?

"Can we really rely on an impartial forensic investigation now? Too much political capital appears to have been invested in this affair to instill much confidence that everything will be strictly on the up and up. This, moreover, is without even going into the issue of whether all evidentiary material is in fact untainted."

Another ?critic of the exhumation???for entirely different reasons???is Arafat?s nephew Nasser al-Qidwa, who compared the process to "desecration," the AFP reported.

"No good can come out of this at all," Qidwa told the agency. "It does no good to the Palestinians."

AP PHOTOS: Scenes from Bangladesh factory fire

A fire engulfed a garment factory outside Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, trapping many workers and killing at least 112 people in the building without emergency exits.

Authorities said the fire started on the ground floor late Saturday and spread upward, cutting off staircases and preventing workers' escape. Some survivors were rescued from the eight-story building's roof.

Thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives gathered at the burned-out factory Sunday awaiting word on relatives who worked there.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Here are photos of the fire and its aftermath:

A Day in the Life of HT: Showered

On Thursday evening, my sister Jen & little niece Jensen flew in from Wisconsin for my 1st baby shower as well as my mom, sister-in-law Rachel, niece Joslyn & long-time family friend Mary Ellen who all made the trip from South Dakota.

Friday morning my sister & I met up with my brother Steve at Sweet Tomatoes for lunch & then some shopping. Later in the afternoon we met up with the rest of my family & headed over to the OP Convention Center where?the Holiday Boutique was being held. It ended up being?a scaled-down version of Holiday Mart with some of the same vendors but was still a lot of fun walking up & down the aisles, checking out the booths, holiday decor, crafts, sampling of food?& seeing what they all had to offer.

After we were all shopped out,?we headed back to?my house where we dined on Papa Murphy's?pizza & spent the rest of the evening catching up! I just love being able to hang out with my family!

Saturday was a day I never thought I would ever see happen or get to experience. It was the day my 1st baby shower was to be held. Friends & family all gathered together to celebrate the upcoming arrival of this precious little miracle I have come to call "Baby T".

My sister Jen (on the right) & one of my bestest girlfriends Jilly (on the left) hosted this wonderful event at Jilly's house & it was perfect. I soon found out that the shower had a KU baby Jawhawk theme which was fitting seeing how Shane & I are huge fans & of course so will Baby T :)? My sister started the shower by going around the room & having everyone introduce themselves, share how they know me & for how long along with a word of advice to this first-time mom. The words of wisdom were priceless & will be forever remembered. Especially those spoke by my girlfriend Nickie who made me - along with half the room - tear up by her very thoughtful words!

Next we played a couple of games & then it was time to open presents!? Everyone was SO very generous & I got such wonderful gifts! I got several things I registered for like my pack-n-play, high chair, changing pad with cover, baby monitor, diapers, wipes & crib mattress cover & sheets . I also got lots of great things for Baby T like rattles, lots of cute outfits, little hats & LOTS of books which I loved! Looking forward to starting the nursery & getting it finished so I can put all these wonderful gifts away!

After opening gifts, everyone enjoyed a lovely spread along with yummy cake & cupcakes. Jilly outdid herself as usual with all the food & my sister's spinach/artichoke dip & beer bread were a hit!?

Before everyone left, I was able to get pictures with all the guests which will be a great keepsake for Baby T's baby book!

HBT: Harper edges Miley for NL Rookie of the Year

Bryce Harper was named the National League Rookie of the Year this evening by the BBWAA, beating out finalists Wade Miley and Todd Frazier. He received 16 first-place votes compared to 12 for Miley, three for Frazier and one for Wilin Rosario. It was a very close vote, as Harper and Miley were ultimately separated by just seven points. It would have been even closer if Miley wasn?t left off one ballot.

Mike Trout winning the American League Rookie of the Year has been a foregone conclusion for months now, but there was actually a bit of uncertainty in the National League coming into today, as there wasn?t really a bad choice among the field. However, voters ultimately went with Harper, who delivered a historic season relative to his age. In fact, only Dwight Gooden was younger ? by one month ? when he won the Rookie of the Year award in 1984.

While Harper didn?t make his major league debut until April 28 in Los Angeles, he ended up living up to the considerable hype by putting together one of the best seasons ever for a 19-year-old. The 2010 No. 1 overall pick batted .270/.340/.477 with 22 home runs, 59 RBI, 18 stolen bases and an .817 OPS for the National League East champion Nationals while playing excellent defense in the outfield and winning over fans and his peers with his all-out style of play. Oh, and he also had one of the more memorable quotes of the year. Harper hit a bit of a wall during the dog days of July and August, opening the door for the likes of Frazier and Miley to take home the ROY, but he finished strong by hitting .341 with 10 home runs and a 1.098 OPS over his final 34 games.

As noted by our own Aaron Gleeman last month, here?s where Harper ranks compared to the best age-19 seasons of all-time:

Total bases (254): 1st
Extra-base hits (57): 1st
Runs (98): 2nd
Homers (22): 2nd
Doubles (26): 2nd
Walks (56): 2nd
Steals (18): 2nd
Slugging percentage (.477): 3rd
OPS (.817): 3rd
Plate appearances (597): 4th
Hits (144): 4th
Triples (9): 4th
Games (139): 5th
RBIs (59): 5th

If Harper?s impressive rookie season was any indication, there?s every reason to believe that the best is yet to come.

Complete voting results for the National League Rookie of the Year award can be found at BBWAA.com.

Out of hospital, Beljan keeps lead at Disney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) ? Doctors told Charlie Beljan he was in good enough health to leave the hospital Saturday morning, but perhaps not to play golf. With his job on the line and his name atop the leaderboard for the first time, Beljan ignored the recommendation and was glad he did.

One day after a panic attack so severe that he struggled to breathe and feared for his life, Beljan managed just fine in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. Despite a pair of early bogeys, and one nervous moment when he felt his chest tighten, he had a 1-under 71 that gave him a two-shot lead going into the final round at Disney.

Suddenly, the 28-year-old rookie has a chance to do more than just keep his card. He's one round away from winning on the PGA Tour.

"I honestly didn't think I was going to get through it," Beljan said. "I just stayed strong."

He stayed overnight in the hospital ? with his shoes on for most of the night ? and only got about an hour of sleep. This is the final PGA Tour event of the year, and Beljan is at No. 139 on the money list. Only the top 125 keep their cards, and Beljan likely would need to finish around 10th.

Beljan said he started to feel some of the same symptoms from Friday as he approached the turn. He ate a sandwich, tried to calm himself, and back-to-back birdies to start the back nine certainly helped. He closed with six straight pars to reach 13-under 203.

That gave him a two-shot lead over Brian Gay (67), Josh Teater (67) and Charlie Wi, who was tied with Beljan until two sloppy bogeys at the end for a 70.

"It's nice to be able to walk around and smile," Beljan said. "Yesterday, I was hanging on for my life."

When last seen at Disney, Beljan was gasping to draw a big breath and sitting in the fairway to wait his turn to hit. Paramedics followed him around the back nine after a spike in his blood pressure. After signing for a 64, Beljan emerged from the scoring room strapped into a stretcher and was loaded into an ambulance.

For most of the night, he felt 99 percent sure he wouldn't be playing.

But with the comfort of knowing that he was physically fine, he went back to his hotel for a shower, breakfast and headed to the golf course. Despite being nervous that another episode could strike again, he was steady for so much of the day.

Now comes the hard work.

Beljan's wife, 7-week-old son and mother-in-law were flying in from Phoenix for the final round. He has long dreamed of how cool it would be to have his family come onto the green to celebrate his first PGA Tour win.

But there's a long way to go.

Beljan had a three-shot lead ? he wasn't aware of this until late Friday night in the hospital ? going into the third round, and that was gone before he stepped onto the fourth tee. Sunday will get under way with 11 players separated by three shots.

That included Sea Island winner Tommy Gainey and Camilo Villegas, winless in four years, along with Robert Garrigus, who won at Disney two years ago. The group at 205 included Vaughn Taylor, who like Beljan is making a last-ditch effort to keep his card.

Beljan was simply thrilled to be playing.

"They released me this morning ... saying that they thought I was good enough maybe not to go play golf, but at least to leave the hospital," he said before his round. "I'm making the decision to come out here and play. Who knows if we'll last two holes?"

He made it all the way around, though the golf was shaky at the start.

Beljan showed off his power on the opening hole when he was behind a tree 183 yards from the hole. He hit a pitching wedge straight up and over the tree, with enough on it to reach the green. He three-putted from 50 feet, however, and then dropped another shot on the par-3 third with a three-putt from about 25 feet on the fringe.

His only other bogey came from a bunker on the 12th.

Several players made a run at him ? Wi, Gainey among them ? and Charles Howell III was right in the mix. Howell was one shot out of the lead until driving into the water on the 17th to make triple bogey, and then making bogey on the last hole to finish five shots behind.

About the only stress Beljan showed was on the 17th, screaming at his ball to "Go!" as it flirted with the water, and it barely got over. He walked slowly, trying to manage his nerves and his anxiety, at times lingering some 40 yards behind the other players in his group.

Beljan said a variety of blood work and other test showed nothing wrong with him. He figures the problem is between the ears and jokingly said, "I need help." This all started about three months ago when he fainted on a flight home from the Reno-Tahoe Open as he was going to the bathroom. Since then, Beljan said he has had a half-dozen panic attacks, usually in controlled environments when he can settle himself down.

This one came on a golf course, and it spiraled out of control on Friday.

It worked out for him Saturday, and he now has only five hours and 18 holes of golf in front of him, along with nearly a dozen guys trying to catch him.

Carlton Grp Arranges $400M Construction Loan for Development of ...

Manhattan-based Carlton Group has arranged the financing of $400 million for the institutional real estate investment fund developing what will become the tallest residential building in the United States - 432 Park Ave. in New York City.

The condos at 432 Park will average $5,800 per square foot, and about a dozen are in contract or near to closing, said people knowledgeable about the deals. When completed in 2015, the $1.2 billion residential tower will raise 95 stories above Manhattan's Plaza District. By comparison, One World Trade Center topped out in August 2012 at 104 stories, once again becoming the largest building in New York City by beating out the 102-story Empire State Building.

CIM Group LP is leading the project, designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects along with New York-based developer Macklowe Properties.

While foundations rarely make new construction loans, considered one of the riskiest property debts to carry, the borrower was able to reduce the risk to the lender because they have already secured about two-thirds of required capital in equity following recent sales from its portfolio. Most of the Los Angeles-based investor's projects have been largely financed using equity and cash on hand.

The details of this debt deal were not made public, but it is a non-recourse loan with approximately six years to pay off the borrowed amount. The fund stated the terms of the loan are both low-priced and flexible, receiving better terms from the London-based foundation, including a longer loan maturity, compared to offers from banks, hedge funds and private equity firms.

Howard L. Michaels (pictured, left), chairman of the Carlton Group, arranged the financing between the borrower and the foundation. Michaels selected this capital source because the foundation is not subject to the same liquidity requirements of many banks and financial institutions, allowing it to underwrite and close deals quickly.

The foundation's role as lender underscores how reluctant many banks remain to put up capital for new development, even though many experts say the property market is rebounding.

The closing of this loan comes on the heels of another large deal for Carlton, which arranged a $430 million sale at nearby 701 Seventh Ave. while raising more than $600 million in acquisition and development financing for the buyer. The Carlton Group is an international real estate investment banking firm specializing in equity and debt capital solutions. The group has consummated $85 billion in transactions since it was founded in 1991.

Nasoya Pasta Zero plus review & Pad Thai Recipe | Your Lighter Side

Sweet, tangy and saucy. Just like you.

Shirataki noodles, in their packaging, could quite possibly be one of the most unappetizing food items one might ever see or smell.

So how can something that looks like floating biology experiments and smell like dirty underpants be possibly one of the most amazing things I have ever consumed with my mouth?

First, please remember that I am a super-taster. What this means is that I can suss out almost any flavor or ingredient in any product or recipe I try. As a result, when there?s an ingredient or a process I don?t like the taste of?and I can?t stand a lot of foods?I refuse to eat it. It also explains why so many of my recipes appearing on the site are so thoroughly tested.

Nasoya PASTA ZERO plus is a shirataki noodle that contains 20 calories for 1/2 of the package and only 1 net carb (3 of the 4 total carbohydrates are fiber), 0 grams of fat and 1 gram of protein. Ingredients? Simple: water, potato starch, konjac flour, chickpea flour, calcium hydroxide, reduced iron, and folic acid.

The texture reminds me a lot of ramen noodles you find in the quick-prepared soups, and is not at all unpleasant. In fact, I rather like it.

Their spaghetti isn?t something I regret-y

See the spaghetti? It was really easy and incredibly delicious! For this dish, I rinsed the pasta twice, boiled the noodles for 20 minutes in water and 1 teaspoon salt, and then served hot with sugar-free, store brand pizza sauce, fresh-snipped Genovese Basil and shredded Parmesan cheese.

General recommendations based on the advice of friends for the pasta:

1. Do not let the smell of this product upon draining hamper you. The smell dissipates with rinsing.
2. That said, rinse twice?and thoroughly?so the product keeps less of that fishy smell.
3. Use clean scissors to cut noodles to easy-to-use lengths, especially since these do not always cut well with a fork.
4. Drain the product well well since it contains a lot of liquid.
5. Serve hot with a heated sauce. Don?t bother trying to get the noodles to absorb the sauce since they are fairly impenetrable.

?

?

Anne?s Easy Pad Thai

Add a splash of hot sauce to the Pad Thai sauce for extra heat. This amazing recipe is based on Anne?s luscious Peanut Butter Shirataki Noodles recipe and is used with Anne?s permission.

Serves 6

2 Tbsp peanut oil
2 Tbsp + 1tsp sesame oil, divided

2 cups cooked chicken tenders, sliced into 1/2 inch strips
1 package (12 ounces)(340 grams) frozen, all-natural stir-fry vegetables*
1 package shiritaki fettuccine noodles (1-1/3 cups), cut into 2 inch strips
2 Tbsp creamy peanut butter
2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp rice vinegar
2 Tbsp sugar equivalent replacement
1 tsp sesame oil

To prepare the noodles, drain them well in a colander. Rinse twice and let drain again. Using a pair of kitchen shears or clean scissors, cut noodles into 2-inch strips. Place the noodle segments between 2 sheets of paper towel and allow them to dry for about 30 minutes, changing out the paper with a new sheet when it is saturated.

Heat 2 tablespoons each peanut oil and sesame oil in a large (1o-12?) skillet or a wok over medium heat.

Saut? chicken, stirring every 2 minutes, until browned (about 4 minutes). Add vegetables and stir; cook for 3 minutes. Add noodles and sauce. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

OPTIONAL: Serve with this?Fried Cauliflower Rice recipe.

NOTES: * My stir-fry mix includes broccoli, sugar snap peas, green beans, carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms and red pepper for a total of 120 calories, 20 carbohydrates, 8 grams of fiber, 12 net carbohydrates, 0 fat and 4 grams of protein. If you replace the stir-fry mix with yours, subtract the following from the ?entire recipe? totlas and add your own.

Makes roughly 6 cups of stir-fried meat, vegetable and noodle.

Nutritional Information per entire recipe:?Calories: 1413,?Carbohydrates: 36.7 grams, Fiber: 16.2 grams,?Net Carbohydrates: 20.5 grams, Protein: 95.8 grams, Fat: 95.2 grams

Nutritional Information per 1-cup serving:?Calories: 235.5,?Carbohydrates: 6.1 grams, Fiber: 2.7 grams,?Net Carbohydrates: 3.4 grams, Protein: 16 grams, Fat: 15.9 grams

Anne?s Pad Thai helped make believers out of us.

?

The final word: I have never, until today, tried a Shirataki noodle, but I know I will definitely not only try these?again? but recommend them to others looking for gluten-free, soy -free solutions. Enjoy! Just plug your nose.

Today's Consumer Remodeling Trends - Kitchen Design Blog

Bathroom and kitchen projects rank number one and two as the most work for remodelers in 2011. kitchen rendering from cliqstudios.com

Replacing old components and wanting better components are the top two reasons for remodels.

The recently released data outlines the top eleven reasons for remodeling homes:

  1. Need to repair/replace old components
  2. Desire for better/newer amenities
  3. Desire/need for additional space
  4. Desire to avoid moving/buying another home
  5. Need to repair a damaged property
  6. Desire to age in place
  7. Energy efficiency/environment concerns
  8. Desire to increase value of home as investment
  9. Change in number of people living in home
  10. Prep for ordinary, non-distressed resale

Bathroom remodeling was reported by 78% of professional remodelers as the most common job they handled in 2011. Kitchen remodeling was reported as the second most common job by 69% of the remodelers surveyed.
This new jump in remodeling is a good sign that the housing market is starting to improve. Although sluggish, the housing market has areas of activity across the country as homeowners work to improve their existing properties.

Bathroom remodels were the number one project last year, followed by kitchen remodels.

Other remodeling projects in 2011 were:

  • Window and Door Replacement ? 44%
  • Repairing Property Damage ??35%
  • Whole-house Remodeling ??35%
  • Room Additions ??33%
  • Handyman Services ??31%
  • Finished Basements ??27%
  • Roofing ??24%
  • Siding ??23%
  • Decks ??21%

There is great demand for products and services for the growing 55 and older consumer as forecast by the NAHB. The 55+ age group will continue to grow in population until the year 2019 when it will account for nearly 45% of all households.

The NAHB also noted characteristics of the 55+ group as fitter, more computer savvy and wanting to live a different lifestyle than previous generations. As proof of this, sales of investment and vacation homes for example jumped in 2011 rising above the highest level since 2005 according to the National Association of Realtors.

For the second quarter of 2012, builder confidence in the 55+ housing market for single-family homes showed improvement compared to the same period a year ago (NAHB).

As the largest demographic, the baby boomer generation still commands attention of the manufacturers and retailers. More and more ?aging in place? trends in product development and advertising as marketers try to reach this audience.

Video Game Crafts 'N Gear #2: Pac-Man Pumpkins, Zelda Key ...

Welcome again to our regular feature, Video Game Crafts ?N Gear! There?s tons of passionate gamers out there, and decidedly not enough gaming swag in the world. That?s why these talented creators make their own, and we round up whatever awesome custom-made art, sculptures, toys, clothing, or random items we happen to find. Of course, we?ll include whatever official merchandise we think is cool, too!

By now its a little late to celebrate Halloween festivities, but that doesn?t make these painted Pac-Man pumpkins (try saying that five times fast) any less awesome. We also have an amazing tribute to the NES Legend of Zelda and some epic Nintendo scuptures made out of? cans?

Remember, as always you can click each image to view it full-size. Let?s begin!

Pac-Man Pumpkins

So it turns out these are pretty old ? and no, not because this wasn?t posted on Halloween, but because these babies were made back in 2009! I?m amazed I haven?t seen them before.

Submitted by Dave Adams for a Halloween contest held on Makezine, Dave recreated Pac-Man, the ghosts, dots, and fruit by cutting and painting pumpkins.

?It?s Dangerous to Go Alone!? Zelda Key Hanger

Never has the iconic quote ?it?s dangerous to go alone! Take this? quote from the old man in The Legend of Zelda been used in such a humourous, practical way. Check out this key hanger ? its like?your keys are ?being given to you by the old man himself!

These are actually available for purchase right now on Etsy from user GeekyandChic, with one-hook and two-hook options also available.

Mario and Pokemon Can Sculptures

When guzzling away endless beer cans, the concept of ?art? doesn?t often cross our minds as we stumble and embarrass ourselves in a drunken stupor. Genius Japanese sculptor ?Makaon?, however, found a practical use for tin containers, and it may be the most bizarre yet most impressive thing we?ve featured so far. Check out these amazing tin statues of Nintendo mascots Mario, Luigi, Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Charizard.

Using?Heineken,?Coca Cola?and Blast Energy cans, Makeon cuts and shapes them to recreate our favourite plumbers and elemental critters. She has also made many other?sculptures?of various animals and other iconic characters such as Batman, Buzz Lightyear and Darth Vader. Kudos for the Totoro sculpture.

Wisconsin's Baldwin becomes first openly gay senator

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Wisconsin Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin made history on Tuesday with her election to become the first openly gay U.S. Senator, defeating former Governor Tommy Thompson in the most expensive Senate race in state history.

Between them, the two candidates raised at least $65 million. Thompson conceded the race at around midnight.

Baldwin's victory is another blow to Republicans, who needed to make a net gain of four seats to take a majority in the U.S. Senate. Instead, Democrats took over hotly contested Republican seats in Massachusetts and Indiana while holding on to most of the states they already had, including Wisconsin and Virginia, according to projections.

"I didn't run to make history," said Baldwin in her victory speech. "I ran to make a difference, a difference in the lives of families struggling to find work and pay the bills."

Baldwin assumes the seat of retiring Democrat Herb Kohl, who is finishing his fourth term in the Senate. The 50-year-old Baldwin, first elected to Congress in 1998, also becomes the first woman senator from Wisconsin with her victory Tuesday.

Although historically significant, Baldwin's sexual orientation never became a major topic on the campaign trail.

"Tammy Baldwin's victory showed what a majority of Americans already know: that candidates should be judged on their qualifications for the job and not their sexual orientation," said Herndon Graddick, president of the gay rights organization GLAAD, in a statement.

Baldwin, who represents Dane County, a Democratic stronghold of the state, is expected to be replaced in the House by Democrat Mark Pocan, another openly gay politician.

Baldwin, one of the leading liberals in Congress, moved to the center during the campaign, promising to support investments in infrastructure, education and research to create jobs. She also painted Thompson as favoring tax cuts for the wealthy.

Throughout the bruising campaign, Thompson argued that lower taxes, fewer regulations, large spending cuts and entitlement reform will boost the sluggish U.S. economy. He also attacked Baldwin for supporting President Barack Obama's health care reforms.

"In presidential election years Wisconsin tends to be a Democratic leaning state..." said Timothy Dale, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. "Throughout the campaign she described herself as a 'progressive' rather than a 'liberal', and her message appealed to both partisans and centrists in the state."

Thompson moved more to the middle as the campaign went on, describing himself during the race against Baldwin as a "moderate conservative."

jimmi: Finding The Right Injury Lawyer | Reference and Education ...

Have you have recently been hurt in a car or truck accident, burned or injured by chemical exposure, hurt on a construction site, or simply frustrated by an insurance company that has refused to pay benefits that are owed to you? If the answer is yes, you need to talk with a personal injury lawyer! The goal of this article is to help you better understand how to select the proper firm.

The personal injury lawyer you choose should be more than just "competent." Your legal team should be "remarkable". Your personal injury lawyer should provide you with resources to deal with all aspects of your case, answer questions, prepare intensely for trial, try your case (if need be) and always be prepared to fight on your behalf.

A truly remarkable firm will work hard to exceed your expectations. They will pull out all stops to get you compensation to cover damages you have suffered, which may include but are not limited to, medical and surgical costs, lost work time and wages, anxiety, pain and suffering, car mileage and many out of pocket costs that you may face. A respected firm will follow up with clients promptly. Look for a lawyer who has a reputation for being tough but fair, smart and compassionate. A great law firm will make sure the client feels comfortable, and at the same time, they need to send a message, loud and clear, to insurance companies and liable parties that they mean business. The right firm will not be scared to throw their credentials around for the benefit of the client.

Injury and accident victims often find themselves in a kind of shock after a traumatic event and do not always act swiftly enough. When a scary event disrupts everything in their world, it is only human nature to "wait a beat" to get your thoughts together before moving forward, but this is a dangerous approach and may not be the best idea. Here's the reason why: Evidence from the accident or injury may get lost or even be destroyed in the hours and days after the accident. Witness recollections will grow fainter and more inaccurate as time passes after the incident. Even your own memory of the event will give way to hazier, less accurate memories. And even worse, if you wait too long after the accident or injury, you may lose your ability to make a claim altogether, even if you have compelling evidence on your side, due to the "statute of limitations" in that state.

Every personal injury case is different. Choose an auto accident lawyer that will give you the professional attention you need to prosecute your case. Make sure they listen to what you want and need and help you feel calm, comfortable, and taken care of throughout your case. Most injury law firms takes cases on a contingency basis. This means that the clients do not pay, until they win a trial verdict or reach a settlement.

Honoring our veterans and service members | University of ...

November 05, 2012

VetsEach year, UW-Whitewater celebrates its veterans and service members with a week of events. This year's festivities take place Nov. 2 - 12, and include gallery displays, competitions, tributes, panels, card signings and more.

"The Veterans Day committee is excited to be honoring our veterans with a number of activities. We are especially proud of the diversity these events represent. Not everything is learned through a lecture," said Elizabeth Watson, coordinator of events and director of the Center for Students with Disabilities.

The week includes:

  • The Warhawk football game vs. UW-Eau Claire at Perkins Stadium on Saturday. The team provided free tickets to student and community veterans and service members, and recognized them at halftime. The UW-Whitewater marching band performed a military-themed show.
  • Roberta's Art Gallery in the James R. Connor University Center is featuring "Stories of Soldiers," a collection of memorabilia from World War II, including military coins, newspaper articles from the 1940s, family photos and uniforms. The Wisconsin Historical Society, Whitewater Public Library and private community individuals are among the contributors.
  • In addition to the game and gallery, UW-Whitewater will host its official Veterans Day ceremony Monday, Nov. 12, at the Alumni Center flagpole, beginning at 11 a.m. A free lunch for veterans will follow at any of the university dining facilities.
  • Information Services is collecting holiday cards to send to wounded warriors, veterans, and military service members. The cards will be signed on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the University Center Concourse.
  • Warhawk Alley will honor veterans and military members by offering free bowling and billiards all week.

The Pentagon Pentathlon combines beanbag toss, bowling, ladder golf, pool and trivia throughout the week.

"This is an activity to get students to interact with UW-Whitewater's Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC and the Veterans Student Organization," said Andrea Payton, Warhawk Alley coordinator. "This is a multiple day and?multiple?event competition, and giving to charity. ?Proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, a charity that helps veterans who were injured while serving."

I want to get into great shape, have a nice looking body, but i dont have any weight equipment at home except for a couple dumbells. i was wonder all the body builders out there, can i get any advice on exercise to build muscles without weight training, like diet tips or any other exercise tips?

you can?t gain muscle without weight bearing exercise but there are lots of body weight exercises that can be done at home.

It's Never too late to start with Inbound Marketing | Business 2 ...

At DBC Digital, we like to stay current on inbound marketing trends. We do lots of research so we can provide relevant materials to our clients and prospects alike. Leading this morning?s business news was the announcement of a product launch by Microsoft. That, in itself, has not been unusual. Microsoft has been the leader in the software industry for 30 years.

inbound marketing denver, social media marketing, business blogging

We?ve come to expect new, usually innovative products from Bill Gates and company. However, Surface, their Windows 8 tablet, breaks from Microsoft?s decades-old tradition of relying on outside partners to manufacture the actual devices that run its software. Say what?!?! You mean?like Apple? Exactly?like Apple!

Many of our clients come to us and say it?s too late for them to start a business blog. They?ve missed the bandwagon. What they?ve been doing for years will have to be good enough. To which we respond, if Bill Gates can change horses way downstream, what?s stopping you?

Sure, you may feel like you?re not a writer. You probably judge yourself too harshly though. No one can write about your business better than you! That integrity will always have a way of appealing to your clients and prospects alike. On that level, you?re ready to write as well, or better, than anyone else in the world. As an ambitious business person, you?ve educated yourself in a variety of ways. Here?s one more for you.

Business blogging is essential in growing one?s business today. In an economy that is still perceived by many as being tenuous, whatever competitive edge one can utilize, the better off?their business is going to be. Here are some common sense reasons why you should be blogging online, if you?re not already:

1. The Internet operates 24/7, every day of the year.

2. The overhead is negligible.

3. Your competition is already using it.

4. It?s the best advertising vehicle ever.

5. Your revenue will increase, perhaps dramatically!

We?ve intentionally kept today?s post simple and to the point. Yes, there are ultimately important considerations when one is developing a blog:?Search Engine Optimization, content, social media choices and many more.

Look around though. Do a little research yourself. Check out your competition?s business blogging presence. As you can plainly see, there?s nothing magical about making a few keystrokes to promote?YOUR business in a way that is helpful to YOUR clients and prospects. That?s really the essence of inbound marketing.

In closing, we?re reminded of a quote by someone most of us were supposed to read in high school, the 19th Century English novelist, George Eliot:dbc digital, business blogging, blog writing

It?s never too late to be what you might have been.

At DBC Digital, we believe in possibilities. Yours! We help educate and inform our clients through a variety of online forums, including this blog. We have to continually hone our knowledge base to serve you effectively. Sometimes that involves change.?It looks like even Bill Gates had to go back to school himself. You can do it too!

Did you have any obstacles that initially kept you from writing a blog for your business? How did you overcome them? Please let us know in the Comments section below!

In-sync brain waves hold memory of objects just seen

Monday, November 5, 2012

The brain holds in mind what has just been seen by synchronizing brain waves in a working memory circuit, an animal study supported by the National Institutes of Health suggests. The more in-sync such electrical signals of neurons were in two key hubs of the circuit, the more those cells held the short-term memory of a just-seen object.

Charles Gray, Ph.D., of Montana State University, Bozeman, a grantee of NIH's National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and colleagues, report their findings Nov. 1, 2012, online, in the journal Science Express.

"This work demonstrates, for the first time, that there is information about short term memories reflected in in-sync brainwaves," explained Gray.

"[One major goal]of neuroscience has been to understand how and where information is encoded in the brain. This study provides more evidence that large scale electrical oscillations across distant brain regions may carry information for visual memories," said NIMH director Thomas R. Insel, M.D.

Prior to the study, scientists had observed synchronous patterns of electrical activity between the two circuit hubs after a monkey saw an object, but weren't sure if the signals actually represent such short-term visual memories in the brain. Rather, it was thought that such neural oscillations might play the role of a traffic cop, directing information along brain highways.

To find out more, Gray, Rodrigo Salazar Ph.D., and Nick Dotson of Montana State and Steven Bressler, Ph.D., at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, recorded electrical signals from groups of neurons in both hubs of two monkeys performing a visual working memory task. To earn a reward, the monkeys had to remember an object ? or its location ? that they saw momentarily on a computer screen and correctly match it. The researchers expected to see the telltale boost in synchrony during a delay period immediately after an object disappeared from the screen, when the monkey had to hold information briefly in mind.

The degree of synchronous activity, or coherence, between cells in the areas was plotted for different objects the monkeys saw.

Brain waves of many neurons in the two hubs, called the prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex, synchronized to varying degrees ? depending on an object's identity (see picture below). This and other evidence indicated that neurons in these hubs are selective for particular features in the visual field and that synchronization in the circuit carries content-specific information that might contribute to visual working memory.

The researchers also determined that the parietal cortex was more influential than the prefrontal cortex in driving this process. Previously, many researchers had thought that the firing rate of single neurons in the prefrontal cortex, the brain's executive, is the major player in working memory.

Since synchronized oscillations between populations of cells distinguished between visual stimuli, it's theoretically possible to determine the correct answers for the matching tasks the monkeys performed simply by reading their brain waves. Similarly, synchrony between cell populations in the two hubs also distinguished between locations. So the location of visual information, like object identity, also appears to be represented by synchronous brain waves. Again, researchers previously thought that these functions had mostly to do with the firing rates of neurons.

So the new findings may upturn prevailing theory.
