Region softball tournaments pushed back a day ? Sports ? The ...

Rain was on the softball diamonds across Northwest Georgia on Monday, so area teams weren?t.
The showers that began Sunday evening continued throughout the following day, postponing tournament play for Regions 7-2A, 5-3A and 7-4A by a day. Region 7-2A and 7-4A began their postseason competition Saturday, while 5-3A was originally scheduled to begin Monday.
All of those tournaments are expected to pick up where they left off today, weather permitting.
In the Region 7-2A tournament at Alto Park in Rome, Murray County (13-13) is set to play Pepperell at 5 p.m. today in a pivotal game for the Lady Indians. With a victory, they?ll secure a state playoff berth one season after going winless ? but a loss will bring their year to a close.
In the Region 7-4A tournament at Heritage Point, Dalton (10-16), Northwest Whitfield (24-3) and Southeast Whitfield (11-15) are all scheduled to play at least one game.
Northwest?s Lady Bruins, one of two No. 1 seeds for the tournament, will take on second-seeded Cass at 7 p.m. in the championship bracket semifinals. Second-seeded Heritage-Catoosa takes on top-seeded River Ridge in the other championship bracket semifinal, also at 7.
The winners of those games are guaranteed no worse than a top-four finish in the tournament, meaning they will advance to the Class 4A state playoffs, which begin next week. Losers of those games fall into the consolation bracket, but will need just one win there to secure a state berth.
Also in 7-4A, three games are scheduled at 5 p.m. for the first round of the consolation bracket: Cedar-town versus Southeast, Ridgeland versus LaFayette and Gilmer versus Pickens.
The winner of the latter game will take on Dalton at 7, while the winners of the first two will match up against each other at 7.
Losers of all of those games are eliminated from the tourney and postseason play.
In the Region 5-3A tournament at the Jack Mattox Recreation Complex in Ringgold, Coahulla Creek faces Adairsville and North Murray takes on Gordon Central, both in first-round games at 5 p.m. If they win, they?ll play again at 7, with Coahulla Creek going against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe and North Murray matched up with Sonoraville.
Losses would put them in the consolation bracket of the double-elimination event, and play in that bracket won?t begin until Wednesday with a pair of 5 p.m. games.

Brown vetoes Calif. domestic workers rights bill
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday announced that he had vetoed legislation that would have provided overtime pay, meal breaks and other labor protections to an estimated 200,000 caregivers, nannies and house cleaners in California.
Brown called their work a "noble endeavor" and said they deserve fair pay and safe working conditions.
But the Democratic governor said the bill "raises a number of unanswered questions," prompting him to reject the measure. It was among dozens of bills he acted on in the final hours before his midnight deadline to consider bills sent to him this fall by the Legislature.
Advocates said the legislation, dubbed the Domestic Workers of Bill of Rights, is necessary to protect a primarily female, immigrant workforce from abuse. They were successful in persuading New York lawmakers to pass similar legislation in 2010.
Among other things, the bill would have required that live-in workers be compensated if their rest period was interrupted during an eight-hour period and eased eligibility requirements for workers' compensation.
The California Chamber of Commerce and other business interests opposed AB889. They argued that labor laws carve out an exception for domestic workers for a reason: providing meal breaks and uninterrupted rest periods for caretakers is impractical at best and dangerous at worst.
It was unclear how the legislation by Assemblymen Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, and V. Manuel Perez, D-Coachella, would have been enforced and whether it would have extended to part-time workers such as baby sitters. It called for the Department of Industrial Relations to set regulations by January 2014.
Brown outlined his own list of eight questions in a veto message.
They include the effect of increased costs he said could burden the disabled and elderly and their families. He also suggested the additional cost could mean fewer jobs for domestic workers and strain state regulators trying to enforce the requirements. Moreover, he said, a drafting error would have cost the state more than $200 million annually because the bill would have applied to In-Home Supportive Service workers.
"In the face of consequences both unknown and unintended, I find it more prudent to do the studies before considering an untested legal regime for those that work in our homes," Brown wrote.
California has become a focal point in the national debate over domestic worker protections because of its size and large immigrant workforce. The bill has drawn some high-profile support, including a videotaped endorsement from comedian and "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler.
The National Domestic Workers Alliance? an advocacy group with 35 local affiliates around the country? has used popularity of the Oscar-nominated film "The Help" to power a national campaign that urges fans to "be the help." The group is helping promote similar laws in Massachusetts, Illinois and Hawaii.
New York is the only state that already has implemented union-style rights for domestic workers. Those regulations have led to back pay and overtime penalty awards, according to the Urban Justice Center, which provides legal assistance to domestic workers in Manhattan.
Last year, President Barack Obama proposed giving home aides additional labor protections such as overtime pay. The Labor Department took comments on the change, which is now under review by the White House Office of Management and Budget.
Household workers and agricultural laborers were left out of the 1935 National Labor Relations Act that established basic labor protections so the legislation would win support from Southern lawmakers.
The California bill was introduced in 2011 but stalled in the Senate for a year before passing both houses on party line votes.
"For decades we have tirelessly cared for California's homes, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities without the protection of basic rights," Sylvia Lopez, a worker with the California Domestic Workers Coalition, said in a statement. She called Brown's veto "a huge disappointment."
Ammiano, in a statement distributed by the coalition, said Brown "missed an opportunity to prove himself as a leader in civil rights."
Democrats argued that workers who toil within homes already face a litany of woes, including low wages and lack of job security, and should enjoy the same legal protections as other laborers.
Republicans said the legislation was intended primarily to create a new class of employees for unions to organize and said it ignored the realities of caretaking jobs.
The bill has exemptions for workers who are caring for the developmentally disabled and also excludes baby sitters under age 18.
Home health and personal care aides are among the fastest-growing jobs in the country, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

Popular antidepressant might prevent heart failure
ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A medication usually used to help treat depression and anxiety disorders has the potential to help prevent heart failure, according to researchers at the University of Michigan.
John Tesmer, research professor at the U-M Life Sciences Institute and professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the U-M Medical School, and his research team at the Tesmer lab found that paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sold under the name Paxil, inhibits G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2), a protein kinase that becomes over-expressed when people have heart failure.
Although so-called "off target" effects are known for many commonly used drugs, this is the first report that identifies a direct link between a specific SSRI and a protein target in the signal system they study, said Kristoff Homan, a postdoctoral fellow in Tesmer's lab.
The paper, "Paroxetine is a Direct Inhibitor of G Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinase 2 and Increases Myocardial Contractility," was published electronically ahead of print on Aug. 21 in ACS Chemical Biology.
The discovery almost did not happen. "It was completely serendipitous," Homan said.
Before beginning a larger search for compounds that would inhibit GRK2, the researchers screened a small library of approximately 2,000 compounds that contains many FDA-approved drugs as a test of their screening procedure -- and found that paroxetine binds to and inhibits the activity of GRK2.
GRK2 becomes increasingly expressed as the system that regulates normal heartbeat and the strength of the heart's contractions weakens. Paroxetine, the team found, improved the strength of the heart's contractions in an animal model without interfering with the heart rate.
Paroxetine is FDA-approved and has been clinically used as an SSRI for nearly 30 years, but at prescribed doses the compound probably does not inhibit GRK2 enough to be used for heart failure.
But if the researchers can identify modifications to the chemical structure of paroxetine that improve potency while decreasing SSRI activity, which Homan thinks they can do, the team hopes to start the process of optimization and to develop these compounds into therapeutic leads within the next several years, he said.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian troops have bombed a northern town near the Turkish border, killing at least 12 people.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the victims of Monday's bombardment of the town of Salqin included five children. The town is 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the border with Turkey.
The Observatory says the death toll is expected to rise because many people were critically wounded. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, put the death toll at 30.
Footage posted online by activists shows several mutilated bodies in a pickup truck as a man shouts that his son was killed. The video's authenticity could not be independently verified.
Salqin is in the northwestern province of Idlib that has seen intense clashes between troops and rebels in recent months.
