Rome's Sears, Kmart safe ? for now

slideshow A preliminary closing list issued Thursday does not call for the shuttering of either of Rome?s Sears or Kmart stores.

Sears Holding Corp. announced earlier this week it would close as many as 120 stores to raise cash.

A preliminary closing list of 79 stores does not include the Sears at Mount Berry Square or the Kmart on Hicks Drive, which also sells Sears appliances and a few other Sears items. It was not known Thursday when more closures will be announced.

In Georgia, Sears Holdings Corp. says it will close its store at the Macon mall, along with several Kmarts in Buford, Columbus, Douglasville, Jonesboro and Southwest Atlanta.

Florida will be hit the hardest by the closing of Sears and Kmart stores, losing 11.

Ohio, Michigan and Georgia are not far behind with six store closures planned in their states. Tennessee, North Carolina and Minnesota are set to lose four stores each.

A spokeswoman for Sears Holding Corp. said each store employs between 40 and 80 people.

None of the closures announced so far are in Sears? home state of Illinois.

The projected closings represent only about 3 percent of Sears Holdings? U.S. stores. Sears and Kmart merged in 2005. The company now has about 3,560 stores in the U.S. That?s up from 3,500 immediately after the merger, because of the addition of more small stores.

LACONIA, N.H. (AP) ? The political world is spinning in Iowa this week. And Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman says he doesn't care.

He's hunkered down in New Hampshire, waiting for Tuesday's Iowa caucuses to end and the race to turn to this fiercely independent state ? the only one where the former Utah governor is competing in earnest.

"It's wondrously quiet here in New Hampshire these days. We have it all to ourselves," Huntsman said Thursday night in Wolfeboro, where he attracted a crowd of roughly 200 people in the town where rival Mitt Romney has a summer home.

"A day or two after the Iowa caucuses play out, no one will remember what went on there, and everyone will be focused on New Hampshire," he said on the second day of a 13-day marathon of campaigning that ends with the Jan. 10 Republican primary.

Come this time next week, the Republicans who triumphed in Iowa will campaign here with momentum on their side and they'll have to contend with Huntsman, who has planted a flag in the state. Polling suggests his popularity in New Hampshire may be growing, but his margin for error in the race certainly is not.

He conceded the obvious, acknowledging that he cannot remain a viable presidential contender ? and likely won't stay in the race ? if he finishes below third place in New Hampshire, where Mitt Romney has a comfortable lead in polls and a strong organization from his failed 2008 bid.

"If we cross that threshold and the headline or the storyline is, 'Huntsman did better than expected, he exceeded market expectations,' then you know you've done something and you can carry on," he told The Associated Press from the back of a black SUV speeding toward the Laconia Rotary Club.

It's a relatively low bar, but a bar nonetheless set by a candidate who has been careful not to set the terms for his departure from a contest that's been difficult from the beginning.

Huntsman was expected to be a force in the race long before he officially joined the crowded field in June. Handsome and well-spoken, the 51-year-old California native offered a unique set of qualifications as a former GOP governor with experience working under four presidents, three Republicans and Democrat Barack Obama, whom he served as ambassador to China.

Perhaps it's the connection to Obama, but Huntsman has struggled to win over the more conservative voters who typically dominate Republican primaries. It could be that he offers more moderate positions on global warming, the war in Afghanistan and gay rights. Despite those stances, he has portrayed himself as the most electable conservative and has promised not to pander to the likes of businessman turned TV star Donald Trump or to shift positions simply to score political points.

Huntsman retreated to New Hampshire largely out of necessity; the state, like South Carolina, allows independents to participate in the Republican primary. Iowa, where social conservatives and evangelicals tend to dominate, wasn't the right fit for a Mormon like him.

Overall, his strategy is similar to John McCain's in 2008 ? hope that New Hampshire's independent voters lift him to victory, giving him momentum heading into next-up South Carolina and Florida. But that carries risks because Huntsman would have to court them without turning off Republicans whose support he'd need to build a broad ? and winning ? coalition for the GOP primary.

"It's our strategy," says Huntsman. "I might as well own it."

He has spent the past few months working to build a campaign organization in the state, so much so that he's competitive with those of Romney, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich, considered his strongest competitors. Going all in, he moved his national headquarters from Florida to New Hampshire in September but has struggled to win big-name endorsements in the state. Still, Huntsman recently earned the backing of three newspapers, including the state capital's Concord Monitor.

But without the funds for a full-fledged television advertising campaign, Huntsman has depended on outside help to deliver his message to the full electorate. An independent super PAC designed to help Huntsman spent $1.2 million earlier in the month on two weeks of television ads aired across the state. His campaign released an online video this week that jabs Paul as "unelectable." But Huntsman acknowledged Thursday that the campaign may not have the money to air the ad on television.

He's partly relying on New Hampshire's reputation for going its own way.

"People here in New Hampshire, they're not influenced by what comes out of another state," Huntsman said earlier this week. "They want to do their own (due) diligence, they want to get to know the candidates, they want to draw their own conclusions. So, putting our eggs in the first primary basket is a good strategy."

And he reminded the few dozen New Hampshire voters at a Rotary Club luncheon on Thursday of New Hampshire's tradition.

"You're going to upend conventional wisdom once again Jan. 10. And we're going to go on to win this election," he said. "I'm just putting you all on early notice."

At least in New Hampshire, he's scoring points for bypassing Iowa.

"He's made a great choice coming here," said Jim Emery, a retired automotive repair shop owner who attended Huntsman's town hall meeting in Pelham on Wednesday night and dismissed the Iowa caucus results as essentially meaningless. Emery, a registered Republican, said electability is a top concern ? but he hasn't settled on a candidate yet.

"Ron Paul has some great ideas ? totally unelectable," Emery said. "Newt Gingrich probably knows the inside better than anyone else, but again, I question electability. Romney is probably the front-runner for a reason, but he doesn't inspire ? I don't know ? a sense of fire. He doesn't set me on fire."

And therein lies another Huntsman challenge ? his low-key demeanor.

He freely admits that he's not a verbal bomb thrower in a political era where brash rhetoric is often rewarded, particularly by a Republican electorate looking for a nominee who will aggressively take it to Obama. Huntsman tries to turn his style into a positive, saying that he's outlining goals that are achievable, while his opponents are "campaigning on a bunch of nutty ideas to whoop up folks in a crowd."

And the two fathers are longtime friends.

Deborah Hoverson wonders what will happen if her daughter and son-in-law are blessed with a new generation of farmers. What color, she ponders, will be seen tilling their fields? They all agree it doesn?t really matter, but it provides for plenty of good natured banter.

The cost is $5 for a carload of people, $10 for limos and $20 for buses. There are 48 lighted displays and one synchronized to music at the end of the tour that makes for a grand finale.

A. Trying out new snow blowers on the inch or so of snow that came floating down late in the week.

Debunked Science: Studies Take Heat In 2011

Researchers claimed in late 2010 that they found bacteria in Mono Lake, Calif., that survived on the poison arsenic in the place of an element thought essential to life. The report was immediately greeted with skepticism from the scientific community.

2011 may go down as the year of the retraction in the scientific world.

Among the highly publicized discoveries that got debunked this year: a genetic basis for longevity; a new form of life; an explanation for autism; and a link between a virus and chronic fatigue syndrome.

All of these non-discoveries have something in common: They involved findings that both scientists and the public badly wanted to believe.

One thing most people would like to believe is that science can help us live to be 100. So it was no surprise that people got pretty excited about a 2010 study in the journal Science that offered a genetic explanation for long life.

The study identified 150 clusters of genes that seemed to be common in centenarians.

"The genetic control was very strong and allowed some prediction of who would live a long time," says David Goldstein, a professor of genetics at Duke University.

But as appealing as that idea was, Goldstein says he had major doubts.

"Everybody that does a lot of genome-wide association studies not only knew that there was an issue, but worked out what the issue was more or less immediately," he says.

The issue had to do with the specific devices, known as gene microarrays, used to identify and sequence the genomes of these centenarians, Goldstein says. For certain gene variants, he says, the devices are known to produce misleading results.

"At least some of the conclusions in the paper were due to this source of artifact," he says, which led the authors to retract their paper.

An Arsenic-Based Life-Form?

Another study based on an appealing idea described a bacterium that appeared to defy the rules of nature. This bug, from a lake in California, seemed to use the poison arsenic in place of an element thought essential for life.

NASA held a big press conference late last year to announce the finding, which provoked a lot of talk about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. But many experts in the field were unimpressed by NASA's event.

"It took five minutes to decide it really shouldn't have happened," says Simon Silver of the University of Illinois, Chicago, who is an expert on organisms that can tolerate high levels of arsenic.

Critics said the study's data failed to back up its conclusion that this organism was incorporating arsenic into its DNA. Eventually, the journal Science published some of these criticisms online.

Then, just a few weeks ago, Silver's lab published a sequence of the organism's genome. The genome showed nothing that would suggest the organism is using arsenic in a unique way.

"It's not a bizarre bug at all," Silver says. "It has the normal range of genes, and there's just nothing surprising in its genome at all."

Even so, the authors stand by their study. And so far, the journal Science hasn't retracted it.

Autism And Vaccines

Parents of children with autism have long hoped for a better explanation of the disorder. So many of them embraced a 2005 article by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that suggested a government cover-up of a link between autism and the vaccine preservative thimerosal. The piece was published in the online magazine Salon and in Rolling Stone.

Scientists soon pointed out major errors in the piece, and Salon published a number of corrections.

Then this year, the writer Seth Mnookin published a book called The Panic Virus, which included a thorough dissection of the Kennedy piece.

"When my book came out, Salon used that as an occasion to sort of revisit the entire controversy and said publicly that it had been a mistake to publish it, and retracted the piece, and actually pulled it off of their website," Mnookin says.

Rolling Stone, though, hasn't followed suit.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

One of the most prominent retractions this year involved chronic fatigue syndrome, a mysterious problem that patients and scientists have been trying to understand for many years.

The mystery seemed like it might be solved in 2009 when a study in the journal Science linked chronic fatigue to a mouse retrovirus called XMRV. That study was a big deal for people with chronic fatigue.

"This is a group of people that initially were basically told by a lot of doctors: 'You're not sick, get over it,' " says Ivan Oransky, co-founder of a blog called Retraction Watch, and the executive editor of Reuter's Health.

At first, the study seemed to confirm that chronic fatigue was caused by a virus. But Oransky says the results haven't held up.

"Now it's become clear that that was a house of cards," he says. "There was something wrong with those results, and therefore there was something wrong with the conclusions."

Oransky says this particular house of cards seems to have been built using contaminated samples, poorly designed experiments, and scientists who desperately wanted to believe their own results.

LAS VEGAS ? Despite strong performances from LaQuentin Miles, Mark Rutledge and Jarvis Garner, Central Arkansas wasn't able to stay with No. 19 UNLV on Wednesday night.

"I like the way we competed tonight after our big loss to Iowa," Central Arkansas coach Corliss Williamson said of the 124-75 loss to the Rebels. "Tonight we were up against a great team. LaQuentin Miles and Mark Rutledge played well, and Jarvis Garner did a great job for us.

"You can give up or give in to the pressure. We showed we can fight. If we're going to lose, I want us to go down fighting," said Williamson, a former star at Arkansas

Miles had 21 points for Central Arkansas (5-7), while Rutledge added 13 and Garner had 11.

"We were outscored because we didn't shoot straight," Williamson said. "Vegas came out and hit their shots. When they hit 67 percent from the field and 56 percent from the 3-point line, you know you're in for a tough night."

The Bears shot 43 percent (29 of 67) from the field to UNLV's 67 percent (47 of 70). Central Arkansas was 7 of 20 from 3-point range, while the Rebels were 18 of 32.

"I believe we had a good effort tonight," Miles said. "We knocked down a lot of good shots. This game set us up well for conference play. It showed us the importance of coming out and playing hard from the start."

Chace Stanback was 9 of 11 from 3-point range and scored 29 points in 23 minutes for UNLV.

Stanback hit his first six 3-point attempts, was 10 0f 12 overall and had four steals for the Rebels (14-2), who had seven players score in double figures.

"I'll do whatever my teammates need me to do," Stanback said. "If it means coming off the bench, I can do that.

"It (winning big) boosts everyone's confidence on our team. Our shooting got a lot better tonight. I just tried to stay focused. My teammates were looking for me, and I just tried to knock them down."

Mike Moser had 18 points and nine rebounds for UNLV, while Reggie Smith had 13 points in 11 minutes, Quintrell Thomas had 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting, Carlos Lopez had 13 points, Anthony Marshall had 10 points and 10 assists and Justin Hawkins added 10 points.

The Rebels last reached the 100-point mark in a 103-56 win over Norfolk State during the 2006-07 season. UNLV hadn't scored 124 points since the 1990-91 season against Utah State.

The Rebels led 63-39 at halftime. Trailing 11-10, UNLV went ahead for good on Moser's jumper with 15:06 left in the first half.

Moser had 14 points and five rebounds in the first half while Stanback had nine points and four steals.

UNLV shot 64 percent (25 for 39) from the field in the first half while Central Arkansas hit 61 percent (17 for 28).

"It (playing Central Arkansas) gave an opportunity for us because we could play our bench more," UNLV coach Dave Rice said. "Every time we can share the ball, it's a positive for us. I have a lot of confidence about people coming in from the bench."

Wacky rules complicate race for GOP delegates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Look out for some wacky results in the race for delegates in the Republican presidential primaries and caucuses. There might even be a state or two where the second-place candidate gets the most delegates, starting with Tuesday's caucuses in Iowa.

New GOP rules require states that hold nominating contests before April to award delegates proportionally. That usually means a candidate who gets 40 percent of the vote gets 40 percent of the delegates. But not always.

The rules give states a lot of leeway to define proportional, and some states have been pretty creative. For example, in Ohio, the candidate who gets the most votes in each congressional district wins three delegates. Ohio has 16 congressional districts based on the latest census, so 48 delegates will be awarded this way.

An additional 15 delegates will be awarded proportionally, based on statewide results. Candidates must get at least 20 percent of the statewide vote to qualify for these delegates. Under this system, it is possible in a close race for a candidate to narrowly win the most congressional districts ? and the most delegates ? but come in second in the overall statewide vote, said Bob Bennett, a member of the Republican National Committee from Ohio.

Early on, battles over small numbers of delegates won't get much attention because candidates are more concerned about winning contests and building momentum. But if the race continues into late spring, like the 2008 battle between Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, delegate totals become much more important.

A tight race could draw a lot of scrutiny over obscure issues like this: If you qualify for 7.5 delegates under a proportional allocation, do you round up to eight or round down to seven? (In Ohio and other states you round up to eight. In Nevada, which is holding GOP caucuses Feb. 4, party officials are still working on those details.)

"All these rules are important in close races," Bennett said. "If you have a blowout, a sure winner, they don't matter as much."

In most national polls, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are the front-runners for the GOP nomination. In Iowa, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas also is polling well, raising the possibility of a split vote.

The Iowa caucuses on Tuesday begin the process in that state that will result in 25 delegates being selected for the national convention. At the caucuses, voters will cast ballots in a presidential straw poll, and those results will get the most attention on election night.

Caucus-goers also will elect delegates to county conventions, who in turn will elect delegates to congressional district conventions and the state party convention in June. These are the conventions where delegates to the GOP national convention in Tampa, Fla., are selected.

Each of the four congressional districts will elect three delegates to the national convention. They will also appoint two members to a slate committee, which will choose 13 additional delegates. The slate is voted on at the party's state convention in June.

The system puts a premium on getting the most votes in individual congressional districts. If a candidate's supporters can control a congressional district convention, they can choose national delegates and slate committee members who support their candidate.

In a tight, three-way race, it is possible for a candidate to narrowly win two of the four congressional districts ? putting him or her in position to win the most delegates ? but come in second in overall votes statewide.

"The delegates are going to reflect the division within the party itself," said John Ryder, a member of the Republican National Committee from Tennessee who chaired the panel that wrote the new proportional rule. "The end result is nobody comes out of a proportional state with a clear mandate, unless of course they do, which would only happen if a candidate generates commanding support among Republican voters."

A total of 2,286 delegates are slated to attend the Republican National Convention in August, and 1,144 will be needed to claim the nomination, according to the Republican National Committee. No candidate can reach that total before April, though a dominant front-runner could build a commanding lead by then.

In the meantime, the primary calendar is full of quirks. South Carolina (Jan. 21), and Florida (Jan. 31), will award all their delegates to the candidate who gets the most votes, even though they are holding their contests before April. Both states already lost half their delegates for holding early contests, so the state parties decided to make them winner-take-all. The RNC says there are no additional penalties for violating the proportional rules.

Michigan's plan for awarding delegates is very similar to Ohio's. But Michigan, which holds its primary Feb. 28, lost half its delegates because it scheduled its primary before March 6, also known as Super Tuesday. GOP rules allow only four states to hold nominating contests before Super Tuesday: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. And those states weren't supposed to schedule contests before February.

Michigan started with 59 delegates, but now has only 30. Nevertheless, party officials plan to award 56 delegates based on the primary (the other three will be the state's RNC members), and simply reduce each candidate's total by half. That poses several problems: Half of 56 isn't quite 30, and what if a candidate wins 25 delegates? Do they get 12 or 13? GOP rules don't allow fractions of delegates.

"We'll work that out once we get closer to choosing the delegates who will go," said Matt Frendewey, spokesman for the Michigan Republican Party.

Couple says Southwest put disabled son at risk

BEDFORD, N.H.?? A New Hampshire couple said Saturday that Southwest Airlines flight attendants put the couple's terminally ill son at risk by ordering him out of a safety seat and into a regular passenger seat for a flight home from Florida.

Chris Dainiak and his wife, of Bedford, were told to remove 8-year-old Nicholas from his protective travel seat for a Friday flight home from Orlando to Manchester, N.H., Chris Dainiak said. Nicholas suffers from a rare illness called Batten disease and can't walk, talk, feed himself or hold his head up.

The attendants agreed Nicholas would be safer in his special seat but didn't know if it was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, Dainiak told The Associated Press. He said the boy has used the seat on previous flights, including the Southwest flight that took the family to Orlando so they could visit Disney World.

He said he wants Southwest to develop a policy to ensure other people with disabled children aren't put in similar situations.

"They just wanted to cover their butts to make sure that they weren't going to be fined by the FAA and, therefore, they decided the best thing for Southwest was to put my son at risk," Dainiak said.

Southwest is looking into the particulars of what happened and contacted the family Saturday to learn more, said spokesman Brad Hawkins. He said the FAA has regulations regarding the size of medical seats, but he didn't know if the Dainiaks' seat was in compliance.

U.S. to help Nigeria hunt church bombers

The Obama administration promised to help Nigeria find the people responsible for a wave of Christmas Day bombings that killed dozens in the oil-rich African nation.

?We have been in contact with Nigerian officials about what appear to be terrorist acts and pledge to assist them in bringing those responsible to justice,? White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

Boko Haram, a Muslim sect, reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks ? two of which targeted churches. A year ago, the group said it was behind holiday bombings that killed more than 90.

The first explosion occurred as services were ending at St. Theresa?s Church near the capital, Abjua. Yemi Ajayi, a police spokesman, said at least 20 people were killed.

Another blast, at a church in the central city of Jos, capital of Plateau state, killed a policeman, said Pam Ayuba, a spokesman for the state government.

A suspected suicide-bomber rammed a car into the entrance of the State Security Service building in the northeastern city of Damaturu, killing four people and the bomber, Victor Ebhaleme, a spokesman for the military task force in charge of security in the region, said by phone from Maiduguri.

The Boko Haram, a group that draws inspiration from Afghanistan?s Taliban movement, claimed responsibility for the Abuja church attack, the Abuja-based Trust newspaper reported, citing a spokesman for the group, Abu Qaqa. The claim couldn?t be independently verified.

The Vatican denounced the attacks, saying the church bombings were a sign of ?cruelty and absurd blind hatred that shows no respect for human life.

Authorities in Africa?s top oil producer blame the Boko Haram for a surge of violence in the mainly Muslim north and Abuja in which hundreds of people have died this year. At least 72 people have been killed in fighting since Dec. 22 between Nigerian security forces and the militant group in the northeastern city of Damaturu, officials said.

Boko Haram, which translates to ?Western education is a sin,? claimed responsibility for a suicide car-bomb attack on the United Nations building in the capital on Aug. 26 that killed 24 people. It also claimed several Christmas Eve blasts last year in Jos that left 80 people dead and another blast on New Year?s Eve at an Abuja military barracks that killed at least 12 people.

GOP hopefuls know where to find slice of Iowa life

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa ? Iowa is not, as many Republican presidential hopefuls are finding out, merely the land of mom-and-pop coffee shops, quaint town squares and golden farm fields. It's also the home of Pizza Ranch.

The Iowa-based chain, where the salad bar holds ham chunks and five kinds of mayonnaise-based salads, and covered wagons grace the napkins, has become the de facto stop for conservative candidates ? in part because Pizza Ranches are in virtually every town.

Michele Bachmann visited 14 Pizza Ranches in one recent week; the "fast casual" restaurant fits with her blink-and-you-miss-it campaign strategy that sometimes includes 11 events a day.

"If there's an event at the Pizza Ranch, nine times out of 10, it's a political event," said Craig Robinson, editor of the website Iowa Republican. "They all seem more than willing to host any candidate coming through town."

The cowboy-themed restaurants, which serve pizza, fried chicken and greens from a "mile-long" salad bar, are popular political destinations because they don't charge for events and are located in the small and midsize towns candidates need to visit on their whistle-stop tours through the state.

Conservatives like Pizza Ranch because it's a Christian-oriented restaurant whose mission is "to glorify God by positively impacting the world we live in" and whose charity blog, PizzaRanchServes, often discusses Bible passages.

"We call it Christian Pizza because it is a chain that's also a ministry, which does good works in a faith-centered way," said Steffen Schmidt, an Iowa State University professor.

Bob Vander Plaats, head of the Family Leader, a conservative group, said Pizza Ranch restaurants became more popular for politicians after Mike Huckabee based many of his campaign events at them in 2008 and pulled off a surprise caucus win.

Vander Plaats, who attended high school with Pizza Ranch founder Adrie Groeneweg, stopped at 69 of the restaurants during a 99-county bus tour this year to unite conservative voters.

But Huckabee wasn't the first candidate to stump at the restaurants: Previous campaigners include Dan Quayle and even a couple of Democrats, Howard Dean and John Edwards.

"I wish I could take credit for what's become known as the Pizza Ranch strategy," said Eric Woolson, who managed Huckabee's campaign in 2008. "But the truth is, necessity is the mother of invention; when you're under the gun trying to schedule a location and find someplace quick and convenient, it works out."

Many Pizza Ranches appeal to upstart candidates because the rooms are small enough that they don't look too empty if only a dozen people show up. Candidates also know what they're getting into at a Pizza Ranch: chairs with horseshoes on the back, bathrooms marked "Cowboys" and "Cowgirls," crayons for the kids and murals of cowboys leading covered wagons past golden mountains.

In a rocky economy, candidates can win points by appearing at low-cost restaurants to show they understand what voters are going through, said Hilary Allen, a planner at Barkley, a Missouri ad agency. "It's an opportunity to a politician to fit in with the average American, especially in the current economy," she said.

As Americans increasingly demand food on the go, even the smallest towns in Iowa and across the heartland have attracted franchises and fast-food restaurants.

For example, Hawarden, population about 2,400, has a Pizza Ranch and a Subway, another popular campaign stop. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad visited many Subway franchises during his re-election campaign, and he says he lost 15 pounds.

Branstad is a Republican, and Republicans tend to be the more frequent visitors to Pizza Ranch.

"Even food has become politicized," said Schmidt, the Iowa State professor.

Asked whether a Democratic candidate had been at any of his three Pizza Ranch franchises, John Mohr wrinkled his forehead and looked at his manager, Natalie.

"No, I don't think we've ever had a Democrat here," he said as voters crammed into a room with stars and belt buckles on the walls to prepare for a Bachmann visit.

She soon strode past the salad bar, the Christmas tree topped with a red cowboy hat and the line of stockings tacked to the wall.

"I'm going to repeal Obamacare, repeal Dodd-Frank and get rid of the tax code," she told a few dozen voters, as a twangy country song played in the background.

Fifteen minutes after Bachmann entered, she was gone, followed by aides and the media. Five minutes later, the restaurant was empty again, except for a pile of blue Bachmann signs, three employees in red shirts and Don Hughes, who looked perplexed.

Hughes, holding two pizza boxes, wasn't sure what all the commotion was about.

"I just came to get pizza," he said.

3DS Hits 4 MILLION in Japan, Mario Driving Software Sales

Enterbrain is back with another round-up of Japanese sales figures, this time wrapping it's counting tendrils around some 3DS sales data. The handheld from Nintendo seems to be doing fine in the wake of Sony's PlayStation Vita release, surpassing 4 Million systems sold with 510,629 moved in the week leading up to Christmas.

That puts the 3DS ahead of the Vita by 13% in the week's sales. Surely Mario and company helped drive sales with a pair of million unit sellers. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land moved software with 3DS units to the tune of 2 Million copies.

Looks like the mustachio'd plumber isn't ready to let the fat koopa sing. With Nintendo, people are always quick to call things a failure and a disaster, but the company has been around for over 100 years. You can't say that about Sony or Microsoft.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Fire tore through a house in a tony neighborhood along the Connecticut shoreline early Sunday, killing five people, making it among the worst Christmases in the city's history, the mayor said.

Officials said the fire, which was reported shortly before 5 a.m., killed two adults and three children. Two others escaped. Their names have not been released.

"It is a terrible, terrible day for the city of Stamford," Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at a news briefing at the scene of the fire. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte said attempts by firefighters to rescue the house's occupants were pushed back by intense flames and heat.

He said fire officials do not yet know the cause of the blaze and will not likely get clues for a few days until fire marshals can enter the house "and figure out what happened."

Conte said he did not know the conditions of the two survivors.

"We had our hands full from the moment we arrived on the scene," he said.

A neighbor, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and that the house was entirely engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

Cingari says he does not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it. Power also was out in the neighborhood, he said.

Charles Mangano, who lives near the scene, told The Advocate of Stamford he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a woman being led out of the house.

The woman said, "'My whole life is in there,'" he said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

The 3,349-square foot, five-bedroom home sold for $1.7 million in December 2010, according to the Stamford assessment office's website. It's located in Shippan Point, a neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

Tony Low-Beer, another neighbor, said he was awakened by a neighbor after 4 a.m. who told him about a "raging fire" next door.

"Cinders were flying all over the place," he told The Associated Press.

He said he secured his three dogs and put his iguana in a carrying case because he was concerned he might have to evacuate. As of Sunday afternoon, he was still at his home.

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Greg Ostertag to play in the NBA D-League (also, catching up with overseas Jayhawks)

Remember Greg Ostertag? Big, 7-foot-2 guy. Kansas? all-time leading shot blocker. 11-year NBA player who went to the 1997 and 1998 Finals with the Utah Jazz. That guy.

Well, Ostertag (38 years old, hasn?t played professionally since retiring in 2006) will join the NBA D-League next week. Not as a coach, but as a player. The oldest player in the D-League by three years.

Scott Schroeder of RidiculousUpside.com first reported the news, which was then confirmed by Jazz play-by-play announcer David Locke on Twitter, and THEN retweeted by the man himself, @gregostertag00.

It seems out of the blue, but it?s not. Ostertag (who averaged four points, five rebounds and almost two blocks a game in the NBA) was interested in playing in the D-League last year. He abandoned those plans a couple of months later for family reasons, according to ESPN. In September of this year, Ostertag played in the Legends of the Phog exhibition game at Allen Fieldhouse and had two points and five rebounds in 12 minutes (PDF of those stats here).

And as for Ostertag?s age, remember that photo of Markieff Morris from earlier this week? The two guys Markieff was standing with, Steve Nash and Grant Hill, are 37 and 39 years old, respectively. And they?re still doing all right.

According to Schroeder, Ostertag will be put through the D-League?s waiver system on Tuesday. The teams with the best chance of landing the 7-2 center? In order: Canton Charge, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Reno Bighorns, Dakota Wizards and Tulsa 66ers.

Scholarship Fund Benefits Chinese-American Students

The newly established Society of Chinese American Professors and Scientists (SoCAPS) scholarship fund recognizes and rewards UC students for their contributions to the community.

"We want the younger generation to love this country and value it as much as we do,? says Jeff Guo, PhD, a professor in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy who helped establish the scholarship fund, which provides financial assistance to Chinese-American students active in community service.

"The service can be anything from volunteering in a nursing home or at an election,? Guo says, pointing to the purpose of recognizing the volunteer efforts students make toward the greater good.

According to Guo, there are more than 100 Chinese-American faculty members at UC and more than 200 additional Chinese-American research associates, lab assistants, postdocs and administrative staff.

The national Society of Chinese American Professors and Scientists (SoCAPS) was established in 2003 by professors and scientists in the Midwest. The SoCAPS Cincinnati chapter was established in 2005.

Guo has served as president of the Cincinnati chapter since 2010. Past presidents include Xinhao Wang, PhD, interim director and professor, School of Planning, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning; and Lin Liu, PhD, vice dean for international affairs, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

Guo says the first scholarship of $1,000 is expected to be awarded in March 2012, with more awards as the fund grows. Once the fund reaches $30,000, the scholarship preference will extend to Asian-American students.

"We have no clear timeline, but we certainly want it to grow bigger and need the support of business and personal contributions,? he says.

Wang is one of two co-chairs for the UC SoCAPS scholarship program; the other is Mei Tang, PhD, director of the psychology graduate program in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services.

Former UFC fighter Browning is big news in Thailand, finally turns himself in

Junie Brownie has been out of the UFC's hair for a while, but he's been back in the news over the last week. Apparently, it's a big deal in Thailand.

The former reality star on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" got into a big brouhaha at a bar in Phuket on Dec. 13. He fled the hospital where he was being treated for injuries, been missing ever since and the Thai papers are all over the story.

Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt for an American man who started one brawl in a Phuket bar then continued it in the emergency treatment ward at Patong Hospital. Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not been seen since.

Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road, Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female bar staff when they tried to intervene, police said.

Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said.

UPDATE: Browning finally showed up at the police station and turned himself in according to Phuketwan.com.

One of those tourist was Simon Menzies. Browning claims it was Menzies, who was the real troublemaker. Fightlinker discovered that Menzies was also in trouble with the law earlier this year during a flight from Sydney to Darwin.

Sydney man Simon Wilson Menzies, 31, was drunk and angry when he told the female cabin crew manager on a flight this week that he could "bring the plane down if he wanted."

Menzies said: "I'm half muslim, half Aboriginal and everyone else is a white [expletive]. I could [expletive] blow up the plane."

[...] The court heard Menzies was on Jetstar flight JQ81 from Brisbane to Darwin on Tuesday com when he became abusive after being refused a fourth beer.

The court heard he was refused service because he continued to be rowdy despite repeated warnings.

After he was refused service Menzies, who is 190cm and solidly built, stood over the cabin crew manager and told her to get the captain.

"Send the captain I will [expletive] smash him I'm the biggest guy on the plane," he said.

None of this comes as much of a shock with Browning. He was nearly kicked off TUF 8 several times for violent outbursts. He survived and was even given two more fights with the promotion.

In 2009, Browning was taken to a Las Vegas area hospital after what was reported to be a failed suicide attempt. He compounded his issue by allegedly attacking a female nurse at the hospital. The UFC immediately released him from his contract. He's gone 1-4 since his stint with the promotion and last fought in August. Frankly, right now fighting is the least of his problems.

Rooney Mara preps for stardom with "Dragon Tattoo" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? When director David Fincher decided to make a film of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Hollywood was abuzz with who might play the starring role of abused, vengeance-seeking computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Would it be an A-list actress like Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman, or someone completely unknown to audiences?

For Fincher, the Oscar nominated director of "The Social Network," the answer was never clear cut. Little did he know that his eventual choice, Rooney Mara, was under his nose the whole time. Fincher had cast her as the girlfriend of Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg in "Social Network."

"Dragon Tattoo" opens across the United States on Wednesday. It is based on Swedish author Stieg Larsson's first novel in his mega-popular Millennium Trilogy series, and Fincher's film follows a Swedish movie version of the book.

To some, it may seem that Mara had a Hollywood "in" to play the troubled Salander, who helps a disgraced investigative journalist (Daniel Craig) solve a case. However, the 26-year old actress told Reuters it was quite the opposite.

"I think he was happy with the work I did in 'Social Network,' but because of that work, I think he thought I wasn't quite right for the part" of Salander, she said.

Her role in "Social Network" was that of a polished college girl, and she hadn't tackled any major starring roles in the movies. Moreover, her upbringing in a large and well-to-do family was far removed from Salander's dark and lonely life.

Admittedly, Fincher told Reuters Mara's casting was "a slow realization," but ultimately he found her to be an "emotional hanger" who wore the character like a suit of clothes.

Salander, with her dramatic storyline and elaborate look that includes numerous piercings, tattoos and closely cropped hair, is no doubt a Hollywood breakout role for Mara. Last week, she was nominated for her first Golden Globe Award in the best dramatic actress category.

Yet Mara shies from calling "Dragon Tattoo" her big break.

"I think everything I've ever done has led me to the next thing, so I can't say that I have one thing that I feel is a bigger break than the rest," she said.

CAREER TURNING POINT

Still, the Salander role is the most high-profile part Mara has ever tackled, and it may be the most demanding, too.

It required her to learn to ride a motorcycle and skateboard, and she underwent a physical transformation when she chopped off her long hair, colored it black, bleached her eyebrows and underwent numerous piercings all over her body.

In addition to the physicality of the role, there was just as much -- if not more -- emotional trauma to display including scenes of Salander being assaulted by her legal guardian.

But there is a payoff. The actress now finds herself in the enviable position of being on numerous filmmaker lists for major studio projects. She's already committed to star opposite Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale in filmmaker Terrence Malick's "Lawless" that will shoot next year.

Her Hollywood career is a far cry from the sports world in which her family is steeped. Her great-grandfathers Art Rooney and Tim Mara founded professional football's Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, respectively. Both her uncle and father work for the Giants.

Mara says her family's sports background does not inform who she is today, even though she dropped her first name Patricia in favor of her middle name Rooney. But she recognizes that her family and its history in football is unique.

"I certainly appreciate it very much. I grew up surrounded by people who knew what they loved to do and worked very hard at that, so that was definitely instilled in me," she said.

Mara recalled a childhood of going to the theater and watching old movies, more than football. She moved to Los Angeles after her big sister, actress Kate Mara ("127 Hours"), was already living and working there.

Small parts came her way in guest-starring roles on TV's "Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit" and "E.R." Film roles included "Youth In Revolt" with Michael Cera, "Tanner Hall," and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with Jackie Earle Haley."

Twenty-five days after Fincher turned in the finished version of "Social Network," he and Mara flew to Sweden to start shooting "Dragon Tattoo."

"This movie, especially, I feel like I learned so much from it," Mara said. "First of all, it shot for so much longer than anything I've ever worked on. And in between all the actors and the things I learned from David, I've grown so much."

Though it's too early to tell if the movie's producers plan on shooting the next two installments of the film, the actress already is mentally on board.

"I look very much forward to it," she said with certainty.

Colts get past Houston 19-16 for 2nd straight win (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Reggie Wayne will always remember Thursday night's catch.

The man with the expiring contract caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky with 19 seconds left, giving the Colts their only lead of the game in a 19-16 victory over AFC South champion Houston 19-16.

It's the second straight win for the Colts (2-13), who will now have to fight off St. Louis and Minnesota for the No. 1 overall draft pick. Orlovsky, who played the last two seasons with Houston, also won his second straight game after losing his first nine NFL starts.

"Reggie certainly had a spectacular game. Caught it well, was active in the running, just all around a terrific game," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said.

Houston was in a position to come to Indianapolis and simply tune up for the postseason.

Not a chance.

The Texans looked anything but playoff-ready. They settled for two field goals in the red zone, didn't convert a third down until getting a lucky bounce late in the fourth quarter, its running game was stymied late and the defense helped the Colts with three penalties on the decisive drive.

Houston (11-4) is now 0-10 in Indianapolis and still hunting for a first-round bye. The Texans still haven't scored more than 20 points in a game since Nov. 27.

When Brian Cushing broke through the line on the game's first play, sacking Orlovsky and stripping the ball, it looked like it might be a replica of the teams' first meeting, a 34-7 blowout. Arian Foster ran for 8 yards on the next play, then scored on a 9-yard burst off the left side to give Houston a 7-0 lead.

Foster carried 23 times for 158 yards but repeatedly stopped the Texans' runners in the red zone.

"We didn't turn the ball over nearly as much as we did in that (first) game," Caldwell said. "But beyond that, I think we were pretty good at protecting the ball. I think our defense played extremely well even though they ran for 171 yards. It was kind of a bend but don't break defense, but when they had to stop them in the red zone, they stopped them in the red zone.

Nobody got into the end zone again until Orlovsky took the Colts 78 yards in the final two minutes, thanks in part to three costly Houston penalties, two of them against rookie defensive end J.J. Watt. After a pass interference call against Glover Quinn put the ball at the Texans 1, Orlovsky lobbed the ball into the corner of the end zone and Wayne beat the coverage to make the catch.

"All in all, it was a great team win," Caldwell said. "When the offense needed a drive, we got it. When we needed a field goal we got it. When we needed a stop we got it."

Orlovsky was 23 of 41 for 244 yards with the one TD. Joseph Addai ran 19 times for 59 yards.

T.J. Yates wound up 13 of 16 for 132 yards in a return to his hometown.

And this one go down as the final home game for not only Wayne and Orlvosky, but also key Colts cornerstones such as Jeff Saturday and Robert Mathis ? and possibly even Peyton Manning, though Colts owner Jim Irsay told NFL Network that if Peyton Manning plays in 2012, it will be in Indianapolis.

"If the situation is where he's back and he's healthy, then I see him coming back and playing here," Irsay said before the game. "I think there is a lot of speculation about the draft pick and those sorts of things, but I think what you have to realize is this -- is the likes of Peyton Manning going to be seen again? It is not coming, if ever, for a very, very long time. You're not going to go in this draft or the next draft and get another Peyton Manning."

Better World Books' 2011 bestseller list: everything from 'The Shack' to 'To Kill A Mockingbird'

Readers who have browsed other bestsellers-of-2011 lists may do a double take when faced with that of the website Better World Books. Most other 2011 bestseller lists don?t have ?Holes? by Louis Sachar, which originally came out in 2000, or ?Animal Farm? by George Orwell, which was first published back in 1946.

That's because Better World Books is a business of a different kind. Whenever a book ? either new or used ? is bought on Better World Books, the company donates an additional one through either Books for Africa and Feed the Children. The website gathers used books through college campuses and libraries, among other sources, and their profits help support organizations including various libraries, the National Center for Family Literacy, and Room to Read.

So what?s their number one book? Better World Books? bestseller for the year was the 2007 Christian novel ?The Shack? by William Paul Young, a book which has been described as a "guy-meets-God" novel.

At number eighteen was ?The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,? the mystery by Swedish author Stieg Larsson which was first released in the US in 2008.

But the rest of the book list is dominated by perennial favorites rather than new releases. The fourth bestselling book was Harper Lee?s 1960 classic ?To Kill A Mockingbird,? and right below it at number five is ?Lord of the Flies? by William Golding, the story published in 1959 of a group of British boys who wash ashore on a deserted island.

And it should come as no surprise that Harry Potter books are sprinkled throughout the list, though interestingly, the first three books are the only ones that made it on ? perhaps new readers or families are still discovering the series. ?Harry Potter and the Sorcerer?s Stone? made it to number eight on the list, while ?Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? landed at number eleven and ?Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban? came in at number seventeen.
