Honoring our veterans and service members | University of ...

November 05, 2012

VetsEach year, UW-Whitewater celebrates its veterans and service members with a week of events. This year's festivities take place Nov. 2 - 12, and include gallery displays, competitions, tributes, panels, card signings and more.

"The Veterans Day committee is excited to be honoring our veterans with a number of activities. We are especially proud of the diversity these events represent. Not everything is learned through a lecture," said Elizabeth Watson, coordinator of events and director of the Center for Students with Disabilities.

The week includes:

  • The Warhawk football game vs. UW-Eau Claire at Perkins Stadium on Saturday. The team provided free tickets to student and community veterans and service members, and recognized them at halftime. The UW-Whitewater marching band performed a military-themed show.
  • Roberta's Art Gallery in the James R. Connor University Center is featuring "Stories of Soldiers," a collection of memorabilia from World War II, including military coins, newspaper articles from the 1940s, family photos and uniforms. The Wisconsin Historical Society, Whitewater Public Library and private community individuals are among the contributors.
  • In addition to the game and gallery, UW-Whitewater will host its official Veterans Day ceremony Monday, Nov. 12, at the Alumni Center flagpole, beginning at 11 a.m. A free lunch for veterans will follow at any of the university dining facilities.
  • Information Services is collecting holiday cards to send to wounded warriors, veterans, and military service members. The cards will be signed on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the University Center Concourse.
  • Warhawk Alley will honor veterans and military members by offering free bowling and billiards all week.

The Pentagon Pentathlon combines beanbag toss, bowling, ladder golf, pool and trivia throughout the week.

"This is an activity to get students to interact with UW-Whitewater's Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC and the Veterans Student Organization," said Andrea Payton, Warhawk Alley coordinator. "This is a multiple day and?multiple?event competition, and giving to charity. ?Proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, a charity that helps veterans who were injured while serving."
