Jerry York Wins Record: Boston College Coach Breaks NCAA Hockey Mark With 925 Career Wins

MINNEAPOLIS -- Boston College coach Jerry York became the NCAA hockey career victory leader Saturday, directing the top-ranked Eagles to a 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday in the Mariucci Classic.

The 67-year-old York is 925-558-95 in 41 seasons to move past former Michigan State coach Ron Mason for the record. In 19 seasons at Boston College, York is 458-223-61.

York downplayed the accomplishment.

"I've always been about the team," York said. "When I was a player, I was like that. Since I've been a coach, I've been like that. I've never really sought individual goals."

York began his career as a 26-year-old head coach at Clarkson in 1972, then took over for Mason at Bowling Green before heading to Boston College. He has won four national titles with the Eagles to go with one at Bowling Green.

York's teams have a record 37 wins in the NCAA tournament. They have won the Hockey East tournament nine times and five Beanpot titles ? including the last three in a row.

York said his thoughts Saturday were on beating the Chargers.

"Our focus is on our team," he said. "We have a chance to win a trophy. We're focused squarely on our team."

York said he plans to keep coaching as long at Boston College will let him.

"I feel good. I feel healthy. I enjoy what I do," York said. "As long as BC feels as though I'm doing a good job, I'll keep on moving."

York's team got off to a fast start. Cam Spiro scored his first college goal 2:53 into the game, and the Bill Arnold and Danny Linell added goals for the Eagles in the opening period. Brendan Silk and Steven Whitney also scored for BC (12-2-1), and Parker Milner made 26 saves.

Jeff Vanderlugt and Craig Pierce scored for Alabama-Huntsville (3-15-1).

Bad news is loud, but good news rules.

If you look behind the often dire headlines and examine the long-term trends, you'll see that crime is falling, lifespans are increasing, and poverty is ebbing. In other words, there's solid evidence for hope.

There's much more good news than bad news. But bad news travels fast and commands attention. Good news is like water carving a valley or a tree gradually extending its branches. Good news is a child learning a little more each day or a business quietly prospering. We hardly notice it.

Examine the data over time, and you'l find irrefutable evidence of progress: the decline of war and violent crime, the increase in life spans; the spread of literacy, democracy, and equal rights; the waning of privilege based on race, gender, heredity, beliefs (Jina Moore and a team of Monitor writers say this much more specifically in our cover story: "Progress Watch 2012").

Every so often there are vivid scenes of good news -- Neil Armstrong bouncing onto the moon, revelers atop the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela walking out of Robben Island prison. But most of the time good news is incremental, which causes it to be taken for granted.

Not bad news. When we hear it, we sit up and ask, "What just happened?" Bad news can make us beat our fists on the table and ask where was God and how can such a terrible thing happen. Bad news is mesmerizing. We can't look away from a collapsing high-rise or an inundated coastal town. We know the meaning of a sidewalk filled with flowers and teddy bears.

Bad news is insistent. In fairness, bad news isn't all bad. It can alert us to problems that need to be addressed. But in the grand scheme of things, there's actually not that much of it . Oh, there's always enough for a front page or a?Web bulletin or a nightly newscast, although sometimes reporters have to travel to the ends of the earth to find it. Bad news has a natural advantage, however. It pulses through humanity's central nervous system -- word of mouth, the media, the Internet. Its images are riveting and its stories are dramatic. It floods the zone.

And when there's a shortage of bad news in the present, we can always turn to the future. Welcome to worry, dread, and pessimism. Sure, things seem OK now, but just over the horizon a disaster is brewing. Don't be a sap. Bad things are on the way.

They probably are. And they'll shock us and again make us wonder if life is out of control. But in this last issue of our news magazine for 202, we're looking in the rearview mirror to see how things are going, and we're finding plenty of reason for hope.

Hope helps. It keeps us going in bleak times and amid disheartening news. But hope has much more credibility when we can point to the reason for it. Asserting that we should all cheer up is sweet. Knowing why is powerful.

Here are some reasons for hope: Extreme poverty is declining. HIV is no longer a death sentence. Technology is transforming everything from African agriculture to urban transportation. Drug violence is decreasing in Mexico. Travel is safer almost everywhere. Crime rates are falling. Somalia is emerging from a long night of anarchy. Myanmar (Burma) is coming out of its dictatorial shell. And while it's true that China and Russia are only semi-free and the Egypt and other post-dictator nations may be going down ill-considered paths, water is still carving the valley. Freedom lives in 7 billion hearts.

Bad news will make headlines in 2013. But good news will quietly rule.

UK's Pearson invests in Barnes & Noble's Nook

LONDON (AP) ? Pearson, the U.K. publisher and education company, is to take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's NOOK e-reader as technology companies seek new inroads into the potentially lucrative business of digital textbooks for schools.

Pearson PLC will pay $89.5 million cash for a 5 percent stake in NOOK Media LLC which includes the bookseller's e-reader and tablets, its digital bookstore and its 674 stores serving U.S. colleges. Barnes & Noble will hold 78.2 percent of the business and Microsoft will have about 16.8 percent, the company said Friday.

Major tech companies have looked for inroads into the industry, seeing tablets like the iPad and the NOOK as replacements for the dozens of books that students must lug to and from school each day.

Walter Isaacson in his biography of Steve Jobs wrote about meetings between the co-founder of Apple Inc. and major publishers to accomplish just that before his death last year.

Janney Capital Markets described the tie-up between Pearson and Barnes & Noble as an "online education dream team."

"After this investment from Pearson, it is more clear that Nook Media has its sight set on transforming the way education is administered in the U.S. and around the world," analyst David Strasser wrote.

Pearson is the largest higher educational publisher in the world and the largest in kindergarten-through-high school publisher in the United States, Janney said. The company, which also owns the Financial Times and whose Penguin book brand is in the process of being merged with Random House, reported that its textbooks and training made 1.9 billion pounds ($3 billion) in revenue the first six months of 2012.

Will Ethridge, CEO of Pearson North America, says his company had worked with Barnes & Noble for decades and have invested heavily in providing engaging and effective digital reading experiences.

"It is another example of our strategy of making our content and services broadly available to students and faculty through a wide range of distribution partners," Ethridge said.

Barnes & Noble Inc. has invested heavily in the Nook e-reader. It has faced tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores, with shoppers moving away from traditional books in favor of electronic books.

How To Spend Holiday Gift Cards From Amazon, Walmart & More (PHOTOS)

Christmas has come and gone. You've likely eaten more food in the past 24 hours than you did in the past seven days, plus spent (maybe a little too much) time with the family and now your wallet is overflowing with gift cards.

Although gift cards really can be the perfect gift (it's one of the only presents that ensures the receiver gets exactly what they want), receiving a plethora of them can be overwhelming. Where should you even start? Instead of letting them sit on your dresser for months on end, why not hit some stores during the holiday season? Not only are there killer sales going on after Christmas Day, but it's also nice to inform the giver of what you purchased with their gift card sooner than later -- a simple task that's easy to forget when you're using old gift cards in August.

Click through the slideshow below for some great items you can buy with all your holiday gift cards.

Our Marine Corps Family, Russian Language and Russian Cooking ...

I received additional information on the possible Russian ban this evening so I'm taking a few seconds to post it before finishing the rest of my Christmas wrapping!!

So currently contacts in Russia are saying that Russians intend to pass this law at least for a short period of time to completely rework the adoption process. Admittedly, this could all change so still stand by until the process is done and Russia decides how to implement this (regarding families currently in process etc). What I've been told is that Russia intents to ban adoptions by Americans for now but leave the bi-lateral agreement in place. This will allow Russians to still monitor children previously adopted from Russia, as well as giving them the right to inspect adoptive homes and visit adopted children. This also means families will still be required to submit post placement reports. Once the ban goes into place, the American Government and American adoptive families will have to show that they respect Russia by submitting ALL post placement reports. The government will have to submit updated reports on all children via the State Department (all children adopted by American families from Russia in the past 20 years). They will have to submit reports on every adoption that has disrupted, every child that has been killed (there are still some that Russia doesn't know about) and every adopted child that has been abused and placed in foster care. And then they must allow Russia to have access to these children and a say in where and how they are placed with a new American family. The new American family will have to submit a dossier to the Russian Embassy and show up at the Russian Embassy for an interview and Russia will have to approve the adoption prior to it being finalized. The family will also have to submit the required 4 post placement reports unless they feel that additional reports are necessary.

One other report that I saw on a family's blog is that they've passed court (in Russia, Moscow Region) and been approved. However, the judge told them that if the ban goes into effect he can't guarantee that the ruling will be overturned by a higher court (a higher court or the Federal MoE can overturn the ruling any time within the 30 days after court). So there are still questions that need to be answered regarding families who have been approved in court but haven't been given physical custody of their children yet. I have no answers on this one. I could give you my best guess (that you'll be fine), but no guarantees as this is Russia.

Also - regarding current court cases, current rape and abuse cases must be won, and the perpetrators convicted and they must serve at least some time in jail (and we're not talking 18 months or time served). Russia was barred from being present in the Georgia court in the current ongoing abuse and rape case. So they can't even be present during the testimony etc. After seeing the 2 families in Pennsylvania walk with time served and another one in Pennsylvania only receive maybe 15 - 18 months of time in jail, I'm not holding out hope for this court case. And if this person walks, or receives minimum time 3 - 5 years, Russia will be furious. They want to see stiffer penalties for rapists and abusive parents. If Russia doesn't ban adoptions now, if the case in Georgia takes a turn for the worse don't be surprised if this issue comes up again and they ban adoptions then.

This has happened before. Russia has shut down before to re-work their system and that is my best guess as to what will happen. I think they'll shut down for a year or two, re-work their system, eliminate the agencies (kind of like Ukraine has but different). The rumor is they will create Russian adoptions agencies with English speaking personnel, or Russian organizations to process dossiers and families will have to go through those agencies, American agencies will not be allowed to participate. That is what part of this ban is about. In the end they'll refers the section about American's adopting (in a year or two) but they'll leave in place the ban on American adoption agencies. They also won't allow pre-identification of children at all unless you already have a sibling at home and are requesting to adopt a biological sibling of the one you already adopted. Russia will select the child that is assigned to and placed with the family. Evaluations (Homestudies) will be done, not just by an American social worker, but also by a Russian social worker that American families will have to pay for. All training will be done either by an authorized entity (medical and psychological) that Russia has approved, or done in Russia (or both). Families will travel to submit their dossier in person once it has been translated and notarized, submitted and received initial approval (like pre-approval in China). After that families will have to travel on Trip 1 to Russia. On this trip they will NOT receive a referral. They will do their 8 doctor medical and do a multi day interview with different sections of the MoE in Moscow. Then they will be sent back to the US while the MoE finished evaluating the dossier and decides which child to place with that family that would be the best match. The family won't be assigned to a specific region. Whichever child the Federal MoE in Moscow assigns them to will determine which region the family is travelling to. Whatever region the child happens to be registered in will determine what region the family goes to in the end. A translator will be chosen from a registered translation company in the region. Someone not affiliated with any agency etc. There will be an hourly rate for the translator and for a driver, both of which the Russian agency will coordinate for the family.

Now this is NOT a guarantee this is what is going to happen. This is just what Russians on the ground are hearing so nothing is set in stone. But the rumors all say that Putin wants major changes before American families are allowed to adopt again. IF the ban goes into place, I don't think it will stay for more than a year, maybe two at the most. It will give Russia time to re-work their system.

So what I've written above, may just be a rough draft. It may be Russia trying to figure out how to fix a system that has become corrupt due to American agencies will to pay bribes. Who knows what the final draft will be like. It could change, and most likely WILL change before we see the final product. But who knows what that will look like, or when we'll do this. Some families may quietly adopt privately directly with the MoE during this period. I've heard rumors that it might happen, but it's not like those families will advertise it if they're smart. And as long as they follow the rules Moscow may allow it. We'll just have to wait and see. What the changes WILL do is eliminate corrupt American agencies that are increasing prices so that many American families can't afford them. It will bring the costs down for many families adopting currently (meaning you won't see $70K for an adoption). We're probably talking $35K including all the changes because all the families will be paying the same fees and the exact same cost. The only difference in the cost will be travel costs. These changes will also eliminate the illegal photo listings that Russia is so upset about, and the pre-identification that Russia doesn't like. However, these organizations can show pictures of children who HAVE come home already with these special needs, and note that there are hundreds and thousands of children JUST LIKE THAT still in Russia waiting to be adopted. Then a family would submit a dossier stating that they are open to adopting: HIV+, TB+, HEP B+, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or other special needs, and Russia will match them with a child that has those special needs. Honestly, I think this is the BEST thing that could happen to Russian adoptions. Yes, for a year or two adoptions may be shut down. But in the end Russia will be generous and will again welcome American families to adopt, with new rules in place and safeguards to ensure that the corruption and photo listing is eliminated from the process.

One of the safe guards that will go into place is the ban on American NGO's. This means Americans can't contribute money to NGO's. Russian Adoption Coordinators would be considered Non Profit Organizations in Russia and Non Governmental Organizations. There would be tight controls on how much money they make (as Russia prides itself on free adoptions). The only costs involved would be shipping the dossiers to Russia, translation, notarization, the translator in court and with you at the MoE, the driver, the coordinators time (hourly rate), dossier registration fee in region/federally (typically approximately $1,500 but some regions are more expensive than others), and passport. The court costs (other than translator) are waived. Also the birth certificate and adoption certificate are also waived. The fee for a passport is the equivalent of $25 US Dollars (approximately), very minimal. Of course, when you add this up over 4 trips (1 for interview, 1 for referral, 1 for court, 1 for bringing the child home) those expenses do add up. Plus you have notary and apostille costs in the US as well. Of course this means the Russian agencies will have to hire coordinators who speak fluent English and Russia is very specific about degrees. They won't be willing to accept someone who doesn't have a University Degree. They'll want a business professional who has multiple degrees and is tri-lingual etc to present these families to the MoE. I know many coordinators who had only graduated from the equivalent of High School. The MoE isn't going to accept that any more. This is where costs are going to come in. That's why I think costs will go up somewhat. But for families already paying $35,000 or more, it won't be so bad (unless you're starting over). I think for families going through the system for the first time it will be a LOT easier, but at the same time the bar will be set VERY high. Families will be expected to show up in business suits, firm handshakes, known some Russian, be comfortable wearing business dress. Women will be expected to wear jewelry, wear their hair up, wear makeup similar to Russian women. Russia is one of the most stringent countries when it comes to formality and they will expect that in these families.

I know this isn't what some families want to hear right now.

For those of you interested in learning more, I would find the interview that Dr. Federici did with the Russian news agency. It's not written, so you'll need to find someone who speaks fluent Russian. None of it is in English. I found it more interesting, what the interviewer said, and what the news person had been hearing in Russia (since they attend all the press briefing and sit through the Duma's voting and readings).

In a different twist, there are NOT 3 readings in the Federation Council. They will bring it to the floor and there will be ONE vote period. If it passes it goes to Putin. Lavrov is now recommending to Putin to 1) sign the ban for now and 2) to keep the bi-lateral agreement in place so that Russia still has rights regarding the children in the US who were adopted previously who are still considered Russian citizens.

Chilean street dogs are protesters' best friends

(AP) ? They don't have demands, but they're loyal to the cause and are always on the front lines of the fight. They run with protesters, lap up shots from water cannons, bark at police in riot gear and sometimes even bite officers.

Stray dogs are truly Man's Best Friend for thousands of students and workers who demonstrate and clash with police nearly every day to press demands for education improvements, redistribution of Chile's wealth and environmental protections. As the protests become fixtures in this modernizing capital, normally unnoticed street dogs have become stars in their own right, with the Facebook fan pages and fawning media coverage to prove it.

"Blacky," a mutt adopted by young protesters, has become the most visible mascot, with rival fan pages totaling more than 7,000 subscribers or "likes." Blacky's admirers constantly upload pictures of him, many showing the mutt with a checkered kaffiyeh around his neck symbolizing the Palestinian resistance movement, dodging tear gas or growling at baton-wielding officers.

"Dogs are super loyal. They stand with the people and I think they support the students," said Catalina Echenique, 17, who is planning to study psychiatry.

Free-roaming dogs number in the millions in Chile in a situation the nation's Humane Society has called alarming. Dog owners rarely spay or neuter their pets, and commonly leave them outside when they go to work in the morning. Many roam the streets all day.

Dogs lurk around the presidential palace, take naps in parks and always seem in search of a bite to eat or the next protest.

While strays are feared in countries such as India, where tens of millions of street dogs have a reputation for biting people and spreading rabies, Chileans often feed and take care of strays. Protesters, for one, are glad to have the dogs on their side of the fight.

Students have been hitting the streets for more than a year and a half demanding overhauls to a school system that's been privatized since the 1973-90 dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. Protesters say families must struggle with underperforming public schools, expensive private universities and education loans at impossible interest rates.

Two military officers in impeccable white uniforms walked out of a subway station recently as two blackened mutts followed them ahead of a crowd of young protesters who booed and shouted insults.

More dogs followed the sounds of sirens ? and the promise of a water jet some blocks away. Police fired tear gas and the hounds ran to chew on the canisters. From a plume of smoke, Blacky dashed out, this time wearing an orange bandanna.

A mass of students and hooded members of anarchist groups loitering at nearby parks flooded into the streets for yet another confrontation.

Meanwhile, Echenique sat in a circle with other students, a stray napping next to them while they prepared to clash with police.

"With a good education we can generate conscience to protect animals," she said.

Despite the propensity of dog packs to join protesters, they're not at constant war with the police.

Just a few blocks from the recent confrontation, police and pooches appeared to be enjoying a peaceful timeout. One stray snoozed under the noon sun next to a traffic officer at a busy intersection, while another quietly napped in the shade cast by paintings propped on artist easels in Santiago's main square, the Plaza de Armas.

"I see the ritual everyday: police dogs patrolling the streets and strays watching over their territory," said Mario Guitierrez, a 52-year-old artist at the square who plans to make the protest dogs the subject of his next work.

"They meet, they stare, and it seems like the police dogs get scared. The street dogs are brave!"

Police officer Eduardo Basaez of the department's canine training unit strolled by with Lola, his 7-year-old German shepherd. They have both been part of street clashes, but Basaez said police dogs and horses are being used less these days to keep them safe.

"Dogs go to the protests because of a pack instinct. They play with the water jets, they're happy and don't know what's going on," Basaez said. "I'm a dog lover and I feel sorry for the street dogs. I live in an apartment but if I had a tract of land I would take them all home with me."

Obama's fiscal cliff strategy is tricky balance

(AP) ? Playing both sides, President Barack Obama is trying to balance his public pressure campaign on Republicans over the looming "fiscal cliff" with his private negotiations with GOP leaders.

The White House is loath to abandon the two-pronged strategy even as the Dec. 31 deadline nears. Obama's advisers see the carrot-and-stick approach as key to winning concessions from Republicans on taxes and reaching a deal to avert the series of year-end tax hikes and spending cuts.

But Obama's campaign to rally public support for his fiscal cliff positions has irked some Republicans. And continuing to publicly lambaste GOP lawmakers as obstructionists for not giving in to White House demands that tax rates rise on the top 2 percent of income earners could undercut trust between Obama and Republicans in their private talks.

For now, the White House says it plans to continue on both tracks. Asked whether the president would be more focused on his public efforts or private talks, White House spokesman Jay Carney said "both."

"We will continue to engage with leaders on Capitol Hill, we will continue to engage with a broader coalition of people who have a stake in this, and that includes ordinary Americans out in the country," Carney said.

But Republicans have made clear that they see the president's public campaign as a hindrance to private negotiations.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Tuesday that the White House appears to be placing "a higher premium on politics than the American jobs that are at stake." And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said that the country already knows "the president is a very good campaigner. What we don't know is whether he has the leadership qualities necessary to lead his party to a bipartisan agreement on a big issue like this."

Perhaps with that in mind, there are indications that the White House is scaling back its public campaign as negotiations enter a more serious phase. Unless Congress acts, taxes will increase on all income earners on Jan. 1, and a slew of spending cuts will begin to take effect the following day.

After holding a flurry of fiscal cliff-focused events in recent weeks ? from a Twitter town hall to a photo opportunity in a Virginia family's basement apartment ? the president is expected to spend much of this week out of the spotlight.

In the one public appearance he did make this week ? a campaign-style rally at an auto plant in Michigan ? the president held back his criticism of Republicans. Instead, he put the onus for reaching a fiscal cliff deal on Congress as a whole.

"We can solve this problem. All Congress needs to do is pass a law that would prevent a tax hike on the first $250,000 of everybody's income," Obama said, referring to his position that tax rates be increased on individual incomes over $200,000 and on family incomes over $250,000.

The president's restrained rhetoric was particularly notable given that his remarks came a day after he met privately at the White House with Boehner, their first one-on-one session in 18 months.

Both sides have agreed to not publicly discuss any details of that meeting, and White House officials wouldn't say whether Obama's dialed-back approach reflected any progress in the talks.

Even if Obama continues to retreat from his public cliff campaigning, he'll have plenty of surrogates to pick up the slack.

David Plouffe, Obama's senior adviser, sent an email to supporters Tuesday encouraging them to share their support for Obama's tax proposals on social networking sites. "Your voices are being heard, and that's making a difference," Plouffe wrote.

Obama's re-election campaign, which is still up and running more than a month after Election Day, pressed further. In another email to supporters, deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter wrote, "Let's get one thing straight: If your taxes go up, Republicans will have made a conscious choice to let that happen."

Obama advisers came out of Election Day banking on being able to translate the enthusiasm ? and massive database ? it used to build support for candidate Obama to build support for a re-elected Obama's policies. It's something the president's aides acknowledge they failed to do during his first term, including during negotiations on the health care overhaul.

There is some evidence to support the Obama team's assertion that its public campaign is working. An Associated Press-GfK poll suggested that 48 percent of Americans want tax cuts to expire in January on earnings over $250,000 but continue for lower incomes. An additional 32 percent said the tax cuts should continue for everybody, which has been the view of Republican lawmakers who say raising taxes on the wealthy would squelch their ability to create jobs.

Some Republican-leaning groups also have sought to build public support for GOP efforts to continue tax cuts for all income earners. Crossroads GPS, the Karl Rove-backed conservative group, announced a $500,000 television advertising buy last week. The TV spots assert that the president's solution to reducing the deficit is "a huge tax increase" and urge the public to call the president and voice opposition to his proposals.

It?s December and getting close to the Holiday Festivities and our favorite time of the year, especially with last year at this time our 2011 Monster Winner DROP made an HUGE run towards our target price of $1.25 making our total tally of 83,000% gains and some members instant millionaires - no doubt we will be looking at a repeat with EKNL this month!

EKNL is now in a monster breakout mode already tacking on 70% since the v-shaped breakout reversal over a week ago. Friday?s session confirmed the bulls are in control breaking though the $0.50 level since 2 weeks ago and up 8.69% on the day.

With Major and key news expected from the company very soon, this will definitely be the catalyst to propel prices sky high. The best opportunity to maximize gains are here and now and smart buyers are definitely seeing exactly the HUGE potential for gains.

We already got confirmation that the company met with key groups to finalize several deals and we expect these deals to be announced very soon.

?In addition to the hundreds of attendees who will be introduced to NCI products, NCI will be providing demonstrations to a number of parties who have expressed serious interest in FREMS and are attending to finalize purchasing arrangements? http://finance.yahoo.com/news/eko-international-corp-nerovasc-clinical-150600594.html

This is definitely a very strong statement by the company to make, and making it is a solid hint that several Major contracts are practically done and ready to be unleashed.?We are on HIGH ALERT for an update on these major contacts and we are already getting hints that it can be unleashed at any time.

There is one thing for sure, we expect significant news from EKNL and ?No doubt? will see a flurry of updates at any time. With $2 near term price target in sights, investors stand to more than triple their portfolio at current trading levels which last traded at $0.50? and holding solid to over 1,000% gains for over 2 months since our initial alert at $0.04. Shares are in super strong hands definitely holding well into multi-dollar levels.

?

EKO International Corp.

Key points that make EKNL an XTREME breakout play:

1) No dilution or insiders selling any time soon and especially at these super low prices.

2) Share buyback in effect. Definitely the reason here is to move prices up to proper valuations and big boards like Nasdaq requirements. We also got confirmation with recent announcement selecting MaloneBailey LLP, Certified Public Accounting Firm as auditors of the Company.

3) Super Low float. With only 5.5 Million active float (shares available at the DTC for trading), EKNL?s share inventory is drying up super fast, and this is already triggering a MAJOR BULLISH BREAKOUT. We expect this number to significantly reduce as the company begins their buyback program.

Scientists build Fipel superbulb out of plastic, makes Edison blush

What do Michael Stipe and Dr. David Carroll have in common? Neither of them like the "fluorescent, flat, caffeine lights" that fill our offices and public spaces. Unlike R.E.M.'s lead singer, however, Carroll is actually trying to do something about them. His team has developed a plastic bulb made out of field-induced polymer electroluminescent technology (Fipel) which emulates sunlight rather than the headache-inducing blue glow we all know and despise. The team from Wake Forest University, NC, believes the tech is a perfect solution because it doesn't get hot, doesn't contain mercury and won't shatter like glass. At least one company is already interested in producing an initial batch, and there's a chance we'll see them before we get desperate and spend $200 on a lightbulb that interacts with our smartphone.
