Joran van der Sloot to Be Extradited to U.S., Charged With Extortion of Natalee Holloway's Family

The process to extradite Joran van der Sloot from Peru to the United States to face criminal charges is underway. He faces accusations of extortion and fraud.

Peruvian judges in January sentenced van der Sloot, a Netherlands native, to 28 years in prison for the murder of Stephany Flores in 2010.

He has long been the prime suspect in the disappearance of Holloway. Authorities want to try van der Sloot on charges of extortion and wire fraud in the U.S.

According to documents obtained through Maximo Altez, van der Sloot's Peruvian attorney, a judge has approved a U.S. request for provisional detention.

This is the first step in the extradition process between Peru and the United States. The document says a formal extradition request has yet to be submitted.

The only hold-up to the extradition process is van der Sloot's appeal, which should be finished in about a month, Altez said.

"I think he will be extradited within three months," said Altez. "He will go to trial in the U.S. Once he is sentenced, he will return to Peru to finish serving his 28 years, and then go back to the States to serve whatever sentence he gets there."

Talk about piling it on (deservedly so).

In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him after allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway.

Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus info about the whereabouts of Holloway in exchange for the money, the indictment says.

He was allegedly given $25,000, which police say he used to travel to Peru for a poker tournament. If found guilty of extortion, he could get 25 years.

Van der Sloot admitted to killing Flores, 21, in his Lima hotel room. The judges gave him a sentence two years short of the 30-year maximum.

They ordered he be expelled from Peru at the end of his sentence and required him to pay about $74,500 in reparations to Flores' relatives.

Joran van der Sloot confessed to robbery in addition to murder, admitting that he stole Flores' belongings, including more than $300 in local currency, credit cards and the victim's van as a means to leave the country.

He fled to Chile and was arrested a few days later.

Another van der Sloot attorney, Jose Luis Jimenez, said his client was under special stress the day of the 2010 murder, which marked five years after Holloway, an 18-year-old from Alabama, disappeared while vacationing on Aruba.

Van der Sloot, who was among the last people seen with Natalee Holloway in 2005, was detained twice but has not been charged in the case.

Natalee Holloway

Investigators have said van der Sloot killed Flores after she found something related to the Holloway case on his computer while visiting him in his hotel room. The two met while van der Sloot was in town for the poker tournament.

Judges described how Flores hit van der Sloot in the face after reading the item, leading him to elbow her in the face. Flores fainted and van der Sloot tried to strangle her, but she was still breathing, so he suffocated her with his shirt.

Van der Sloot then tried to clean the room by removing the sheets and changing his bloodied shirt, they said. He was caught in a taxi near the Chilean central coastal city of Vina del Mar, then charged with murder and later convicted.

Holloway's body has not been found, and no one has been charged in relation to the case in Aruba. Six and a half years after Holloway went missing, Alabama Probate Judge Alan King signed an order declaring her legally dead.

Exclusive: G. Dep Calls Guilty Verdict 'God's Will'

'I'ma just stay strong and hopefully I'll see y'all in the near future,' the former Bad Boy MC tells MTV News in a jailhouse interview.

Two days after being convicted of second-degree murder, G. Dep spoke exclusively to MTV News on Thursday (April 19), where he reacted to the verdict from behind bars.

"However it went down, it was just one of them things where I knew I was facing some type of charge, so whatever the verdict was, I knew it was God's will," Dep told us by phone as he awaits sentencing in lockup.

The former Bad Boy rapper, born Trevell Coleman, was found guilty on Tuesday of killing John Henkel in a botched robbery attempt nearly two decades ago in his hometown of Harlem. Coleman made headlines in 2010 after he confessed — unprovoked — that he had committed the crime in a surprising confession to police at Manhattan's 25th precinct. At the time, Coleman said that he longed to clear his conscience.

Although he took blame for the shooting, Coleman's lawyer, Anthony Ricco, argued in court last week that the victim was not the same man that police had pinned to the crime.

Despite the outcome, the 37-year-old seemed at peace with the judgment call. "You know, someone was taken from [the Henkel] family, so I can't feel like I was robbed in any kind of way," he said. "I just want to thank everyone that was involved in the case. I don't have no ill thoughts towards anybody."

That is if you don't count a few reporters who covered the case for New York's Daily News.

"I just wanna let people know there's a couple of reporters out there that's just talking that talk," he snarled. "I just had to make sure everything was everything," he explained about his decision to fight the charge in court. "I was already putting myself out there. I had to make sure everything was what it was. That's why the trial even was on."

G. Dep signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records in 1998, and went on to release his debut LP, Child of the Ghetto, in 2001. The record spawned two well-received singles, "Let's Get It" and "Special Delivery," but Dep's rap career failed to take off. By 2003, he had parted ways with Bad Boy. Coleman took another stab at the indusry, dropping a mixtape the following year, but his various arrests and battles with drug abuse thwarted those efforts.

Dep is scheduled for sentencing on May 8, when he'll face up to 15 years in jail.

"I'ma just stay strong and hopefully I'll see y'all in the near future or the far future," Dep said when asked how he feels about the impending jail time. "I know life goes on, praise God. And one day maybe I could say hello to y'all again."

Windows Server 8 gets a new name, roses retain their sweetness

Image

A wise man once said that names don't matter, because what something's called won't change how mustard tastes. Microsoft has clearly taken that wisdom to its heart, spending two seconds (we hope) in deciding that official title of Windows Server 8 will be... Windows Server 2012. In other news, System Center 2012 -- Microsoft's private cloud software for enterprise users -- is now available for evaluation and purchase. Carry on.

UFO over South Korea? Why the video is probably fake. (+video)

UFO sighting: Recently uploaded video of a UFO flying over South Korea raises some red flags.

An airplane passenger videoed a mysterious oval white object flying over Seoul, South Korea, April 7. The video has been lighting up the Internet since, and of course many people are offering extraterrestrial explanations.

As is de rigueur these days, the UFO clip was uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed millions of times. Some comments say it's clearly an extraterrestrial spacecraft; others insist it's a fake. Still others say it's neither but instead is a real object ? such as a plastic bag in the wind, a parachute seen from above, or a drop of water on the window ? that simply looks strange from that angle.

Aside from the anonymity of the cameraman, the video raises some red flags about its authenticity. For one thing, the video is not complete; it has been purposely edited to leave some information out. We know this because it begins in progress, with the UFO already well in frame, in the lower right-hand corner. The video camera didn't suddenly turn on to capture that scene; there must be at least some video that was recorded the first few seconds of the camera being turned on or the cameraman pointing the camera out the window. This type of selective editing is common among UFO hoax videos.

There's also the fact that the cameraman waits almost seven seconds before he mentions the UFO to his companion. It's clearly present, and it would be hard to keep your reaction to yourself if you were watching while you were videotaping.

Perhaps most strange, even though he clearly spots the UFO, the cameraman makes no effort to follow the object after it zooms up and out of frame; instead he videotapes more or less the same area of sky for the remaining 10 seconds of the clip. [Video of UFOs Swarming Over Las Vegas Is for the Birds]

While these internal clues suggest something's not right with the video, the question remains: Was it a real object? Some of the most popular explanations don't fit the facts. A plastic bag, for example, would be unlikely to reach that altitude (and would not appear that large), and a parachute could not move as seen in the video.

The best earthly explanation for the UFO is that it's a droplet of water on the outside of the window being pushed up by airflow coming from under the fuselage. This would explain why the UFO is out of focus: because it's close to the lens. It would not, however, explain why the UFO appears to maintain a constant shape. Droplets of water, especially when subjected to high pressure, tend to deform and leave droplet trails as they move across a smooth surface. This one does not.

Then there's the fact that the light and shadow pattern on the blurry white object doesn't change as it moves. It's almost as if the UFO intentionally maintained exactly the same angle toward the camera the whole time ? not impossible, but highly suspicious.

Absent a terrestrial explanation, we turned to Derek Serra, a Hollywood visual effects artist who has analyzed previous UFO videos. Serra said he finds several elements in this South Korean UFO video that "scream fake," including that "the motion blur was done by an amateur," he told Life's Little Mysteries. "When the camera zooms in a bit, and when the UFO flies off screen, you can seen 'ghosting' of the image. Actual motion blur of real, three-dimensional objects creates a smooth gradient, not a stuttered ghosting like we see in this video. It is something we make sure we do right when working on shots for TV and film."

Though all signs point to a hoax, it's possible that alien spacecraft technology is so advanced that the spacecraft have the sneaky ability to appear on our cameras looking exactly like faked video images.

Samsung will unveil the next Galaxy phone May 3rd in London
After months of rumors Samsung has officially announced the world will meet the next Galaxy phone in London on May 3rd with this invite, first received by Dutch site Tweakers.net. While most speculation will immediately focus around something we're expecting to arrive as the Galaxy S III, the BlackBerry World-spoiling invite we received is conspicuously devoid of details like name or specifications. While we'll keep the address of the Samsung Unpacked event to ourselves, the only other information included is the date / time (2PM ET) and the address for a live stream on Facebook. The original Galaxy S and GS2 are already million unit sellers many times over since first launching two years ago and have led the Android pack for most of this time, so what will Samsung do to top itself this time? (Answer: not 3D, and it's probably a little too late for another Continuum-like gimmicky split display.) There are just 17 days left until we find out for sure.
